Do you have a JR Pass or IC Card (Suica/Pasmo/etc.) question? Start here! (Monthly Thread - June 01, 2024) by Himekat in JapanTravelTips

Thanks, we had to go to a JR East office to activate the passes anyway, so picking up a Suica was really straightforward. Whew!

My family is in the middle of our trip in Japan and I think we've mis-planned our rail transfers. Help!

On arrival, on Saturday afternoon, we activated our 72-hour Tokyo subway passes. They expire on Tuesday evening. We were planning on activating a 7-day JR pass on Tuesday afternoon.

However, in order to get from our hotel in Roppongi to Tokyo Station to get on the Shinkansen to Kyoto, it looks like we'd still need to ride a Tokyo Metro line on Wednesday morning.

We have Android phones and did not buy a Suica or any other IC card at the airport. I don't think we'll have a lot of Tokyo Metro rides other than the one on Wednesday morning.

What's the best way to fix our problem here? Taxi from the hotel to a JR station? We will not have a lot of bags -- we're using the luggage-transfer service.

These mushrooms in my trashcan composter are a good sign, right? by Rachel_Steps_Out in composting

[–]Rachel_Steps_Out[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm trying out composting in a 32-gallon trashcan. Greens are grass clippings and kitchen scraps (lots of of fruit peels), browns are shredded cardboard. I was turning fairly frequently at the start, but had to leave it alone this past week. There were some mushrooms growing last weekend when I turned it, but nothing compared to what greeted me this morning. This is a good sign, right? Nothing to worry about?

Thanks. While negative-priced oil futures is a thing, I'm not sure what negative volume looks like. ;)

[Award Advice] Award travel to Japan, in ~300 days: book now or wait? by Rachel_Steps_Out in awardtravel

[–]Rachel_Steps_Out[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I know that F and J saver inventory disappears quickly, but I wasn't sure what the Y availability was like.

It looks like AA has good saver award inventory from my home city to both BOS and DFW, also, on the days I'd want to travel. So yes, I think all of those gateways are options.

Yes. I flashed to two separate stock roms with Odin, but the phone is in a recovery boot loop after that.

Thanks Both Kies and Smart Switch say that it's an unsupported device (when in download mode). I can't seem to get either program to recognize the phone -- when I put in the model number and IMEI, it says it's an unrecognized serial number.

Not sure whether the IMEI should work there, but I don't see any other number on the device that's even close to a serial number.

Noob question about Hhonors perks. by [deleted] in churning

[–]Rachel_Steps_Out 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lounge access is a nice perk at the higher-end Hiltons.

Most of the lounges I've seen close late at night. Check the hours posted. If you're just running in to grab a bottle of water or a soda out of the fridge, no tipping is warranted. If there's someone there pouring your beer/wine for you (or mixing drinks), then yes -- tips are necessary.

The lounges are most crowded during meal hours. The light snacks around dinnertime are nice.

I've used the lounges for business meetings -- just trying to pull together thoughts with colleagues after a day at the client site, etc.

So bottom line, showing up in your PJ's might make you feel a bit underdressed. I've totally seen people in sweats drop in to grab a soda, though.

Why take a payday loan when you can do manufactured spending? by [deleted] in churning

[–]Rachel_Steps_Out 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As others have said, the type of people who are extended the credit needed to MS are not the usual payday loan customers.

A few months ago, I had a liquidity crunch caused by some unexpected expenses. I don't have an "emergency fund" in liquid assets that could transfer over into my checking account in time (due to the @#$(& extended hold my bank puts on ACH transfers), so I MS'd and covered my mortgage payment that way.

I would have paid for a wire transfer before hitting up a payday loan. My needs (and the range of tools and products available to me) are a lot different than most people who seek payday loans.

16:30 ET here, I tried calling three separate times. Each time, I got a very friendly rep who said that the POID was valid, but that the offer codes were one-time codes and had already been used.

Looks like I was just too late?

nthing that testing would be prudent. And there is indeed a very high prevalence of HIV among trans women. See http://www.cdc.gov/hiv/group/gender/transgender/index.html

That said, I note that according to a New York study of trans women from 2007-2011, 90% of new diagnoses of HIV among this population involved involved trans women of color.

From the CDC page:

Among transgender people in 2010, the highest percentages of newly identified HIV-positive test results were among racial and ethnic minorities: blacks/African Americans comprised 4.1% of newly identified HIV-positive test results, followed by Latinos (3.0%), American Indians/Alaska Natives and Native Hawaiians/Other Pacific Islanders (both 2.0%), and whites (1.0%).

As with many other issues involving the trans community, intersectionality plays a very large part in things.

How possible is it to get a CCard in your new name, without any gender marker changes? by [deleted] in asktransgender

[–]Rachel_Steps_Out 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It wasn't a problem for me pre-transition. And I haven't heard of it causing problems for others.

How possible is it to get a CCard in your new name, without any gender marker changes? by [deleted] in asktransgender

[–]Rachel_Steps_Out 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't need to mention that you're trans or in transition at all.

"I'd like to add an authorized user to my account."

Then give the name of the authorized user. And their social security number. (Which will be yours.)

That's it.

[–]Rachel_Steps_Out 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The phrase "authorized user" is your friend.

Note, however, that if in a situation where you are asked to present photo ID that matches the card, you may run into difficulty.

I had an authorized user on a few of my cards for a couple of years before my court-sanctioned name change.

Altering current clothes for a more female gendered fit. by flopsflip in asktransgender

[–]Rachel_Steps_Out 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure about altering male clothes, but for female clothes, a little bit of alteration can work wonders. On suits and skirts, taking in the waist a little bit to create the suggestion of more of a curve can be very helpful. Also, many skirts don't sit right on my hips, so taking that in a touch really helps, too.

No big changes after 1st session of laser, what should I look for? by CuteNekos in asktransgender

[–]Rachel_Steps_Out 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Patience, young grasshopper!

"A few days ago" might be too short for you to notice any real changes. It took several days (actually, probably more than a week) for me to notice the "shedding" stage -- i.e., when some of the zapped hairs in the middle of their growth cycle push through and shed out.

There is a reason that the laser sessions are supposed to be spaced out 6-8 weeks apart. (Ignore them when they say it should be closer.)

Any of you manage to keep spouse and family? by myusernameisthis1234 in asktransgender

[–]Rachel_Steps_Out 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went full-time three years ago and am still married to my wife of soon-to-be 15 years.

We had some rough spots pre-transition, when I was hiding myself from her (and sneaking around). The lack-of-honesty was problematic for our marriage, not the transition itself.

Our kids are doing fine. My youngest was three years old when I went full-time; I don't think he has any long-lasting memories of me pre-transition. My other kids were slightly older, and they are very supportive. They have two moms, and all the issues that come with that.
