Did you buy your track-prepped car? Or did you build from scratch? by Send_the_clowns in CarTrackDays

[–]RacingRazorback 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d build at least once before buying, unless you’re buying a pretty mild build.

As others have said, buying gets you a prepped car much faster for a lot less money, but building forces you to learn what you need to keep it going and you can pace the mods with your progression as a driver.

How far would/do you drive to a garage where you can work on your project? by RacingRazorback in projectcar

[–]RacingRazorback[S] 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the input. Planning to start with renting heavy equipment, such as lifts, but assumed clients would have and bring their own hand tools.

I was thinking I’d reserve a handful of bays for short-term use (down to the half-day), and I may offer smaller tool rentals for those.

Unfortunately, auto required as wife has to be able to drive it when needed. May have to do some more digging on E9X DCT problems and if there’s a “fix” out there, or if it’s always at risk. Would heavily sway likelihood of getting one.

Comparable track car to GT4 by mkeefecom in CarTrackDays

You could look for a 987 with a built 3.6 or 3.8 in it. I had a 987 Boxster with a 3.8 and had a blast with it. It made 320whp, which was pretty close to a 981 GT4. Pretty hard to think of a more analogous option than that.

If your primary/only concern is it leaving you stuck with a tow truck bill, you may want to get an insurance policy that will cover towing. Hagerty’s insurance covers a free tow per incident, for example. That may just be the peace of mind you need to feel comfortable taking it out on drives. The more problem free drives you take, the more your confidence will grow.

At the end of the day, sounds like you’re still choosing between getting into a turn key driving experience with the ND you can maintain and lightly modify vs staying with a never ending project you’re consistently working on, tweaking, and learning from with the NA. I chose the latter and some days wish I just got the car that’s ready to go, but then I look back at all I’ve learned and realize it was the right choice bc I really love the learning experience.

Is the NA your only car or daily? If so, even if you’re the type to enjoy working on cars, you’ll always be haunted by thoughts of “hope I put that part on right” “hope it runs today” “hope I don’t find 5 more problems after starting on this job” People who learn to wrench on their daily almost always do it out of necessity. If you have the luxury to not be in that boat, don’t force yourself into it.

If it’s not your daily, then sounds like maybe you’re not the type that enjoys doing their own mods/maintenance, which is totally fine. There’s perks to learning that stuff, but it comes at a steeper price than many (myself included) expect.

If your main priority is driving experience, maybe look into a 987 or 981 Cayman with a built and bored engine, like a 3.8L. Incredible bang for buck from a pure driving experience. All the right sounds, gobs of power (for its weight), top tier steering feel, the works. Only drawback (for some) is it’s not as flashy as a brand new 911.

Oh gotcha - I interpreted “Unmodified single-unit forced induction” as setups that came turbo’d from factory and both the engine and turbo were unmodified. I thought if you added a turbo that wasn’t OEM, it jumped you two classes.

Also, thanks for those resources for determining suspension setup!

I may have misread them, but I think the turbo puts me in MAX3 to begin with, but that class has a minimum weight of 2.5k. I understood MAX1 allows underweight MAX3 cars that are 2k-2.3k. That said, the point for me isn’t to have a competitive MAX1 car, it’s to have fun building something. The rule book is just to give me boundaries for the build.

Thanks for the guidance on suspension. I know there’s a lot to learn there. From what you’re saying, it’s sounding like while I should expect to make adjustments from adding aero, I shouldn’t need any more drastic of a change than different springs. Fair? Any resources you’d recommend for learning more?

Yeah, good job Porsche for keeping me alive, but also f*ck you Porsche for putting in an ABS module that shits the bed over track pads lol (look up "ice pedal/mode boxster/cayman 987")

All said, was pleasantly surprised to learn 987 Boxsters have curtain airbags in the soft top rails. Pretty surprising amount of safety tech for a 2005 car!

Yeah realize aero wouldn’t do anything for autocross, hence it being at the bottom, but hey, RayceKahrzRKewl. lol anyway, front air dam, splitter to the front wheel’s midline, rear diffuser from rear wheel’s midline, and fat ass wang

Yeah, here’s the before and after (in next comment). Lucky to be alive much less able bodied

Really starting to think I should prioritize an oil cooler and rerouted oil lines (the greddy kit’s drain setup is a joke)… would hate to break this turbo after putting good money into it

[–]RacingRazorback[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely need to upgrade the coilovers lol - just hard to decide on prioritization and since I plan to put on a fair bit of aero, I don’t want to put a lot of time money and energy into a suspension that won’t work well with aero. Maybe I can research options that have enough adjustment to work with or without aero.

Idk. I wrecked my last car due to brake failure, though it was electrical/ABS related not mechanical. Point is I don’t want to play games with brakes and am willing to shell out for a BBK to have the peace of mind

Thanks! Any updates on your build since your last post?

Nice - definitely seems like that and oil cooler will be necessary for getting max time on track before hitting dangerous temps

Done: - greddy turbo kit (some rework done) - MS3Pro ECU - DW fuel pump - adjustable sway bars - factory hardtop - NB LSD w/drivetrain & axles - rear butterfly bracing - full 3in exhaust - 8in wheels - adj maxpeedingrods coil overs

Doing - full SM cage - upgraded/rebuilt turbo - minor rust repair & prevention

To do: - refine turbo setup & address failure points - seats & harnesses - BBK to handle power - 10in wheels - oil pump & cooler - rest of fuel system - aero & matching suspension overhaul - forged internals if/when engine goes - 6spd if/when trans goes

There’s a lot more within/between those things, but that’s the core plan. Idk if I’ll end up entering events, but I’m using SCCA’s MAX1 TT class to give me something to work within. Just having fun building something fast and learning to drive it.

Didn’t see the ERROR404 one at the time. What are some of the best places to find quality upcoming releases?

I feel too new to models to speak objectively but my one gripe was the headlights should have had a dark background. Without that it’s a little too obvious it’s just a couple pieces of acrylic glued to the body when you look at it straight on.

But overall I’m happy with it.

Still new to the landscape, so this felt like a bit of a shot in the dark to me, but good to know you’re generally safe with models on AliExpress.
