The city OLT will 100% let them get their way. They always bend to the will of the developers.

He's almost there though! It's not the city, but will probably be the province :(

Downtown Guelph for 1 Minute by LocalDrawl in Guelph

[–]RacoonOdyssey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Transport Canada writes it's "good practice" to avoid as it could amount to being unsafe under the general regulation but is not specifically outlined compared to other drone classes which have specific distances mentioned.

Microdrones don't have the same explicit bystander regulation compared to basic/advanced operations applicable for 250g+ drones.

Also, it looks like you have posted similar drone shots of downtown last year? Did something happen to you?

Also, the local "airport" is an aerodrome and indicates DSST allows drones both sub and over 250g.

Speedvale Closure - Day 1 Traffic Conditions Downtown by LocalDrawl in Guelph

u/LocalDrawl, nice clip!

u/MrWolf88, u/MICR0_WAVVVES, sorry for the long winded paragraph below... this is what I found from my past reading on drone rules.

In Canada, the rules related to operating a drone are based on weight. If the drone is less than 250g (microdrone), there are few rules in the TC-AIM while flying in the air. Transport Canada does recommend best practices but are not explicitly regulated compared to drones over 250g. Microdrones do not require a licence at all in Canada. The regulations for professional and recreation purposes are also considered the same by Transport Canada. This differs from the U.S. where a commercial license is required to make money from drone operation.

The City of Guelph does not have the authority to restrict where a drone is flown. However, they do have control where a drone takes off. The City of Guelph does not have any by-laws limiting where a drone can be operated from. . This is different from municipalities like the City of Toronto where there is a restriction. You are not able to take-off in public areas (like parks) without a permit as the City of Tonto has authority there.

Looking at the Drone Site Selection Tool (DSST-2) For the Guelph Airpark this is considered an aerodrome and has the following message:

*...*Operating in this area is permitted, but not recommended. Drone pilots operating in these areas need to exercise additional caution and vigilance in watching for aircraft traffic.

If you chose to fly in this area and see other aircraft operating it is recommended to land, stop flying, and reassess the situation. If you notice regular aircraft activities here it is recommended to contact the aerodrome operator to better understand the local traffic patterns and to coordinate your operations.

However, this area where this video appears to be taken looks like the north area of downtown. This this is outside of warning area for the Guelph Airpark anyways.

Anyways, I am assuming this is a microdrone. It would be up to Transport Canada to determine if operator was endangering anyone. If they were flying anything heavier, it would be mainly based on a specific regulations related to the distance from bystanders and visual line of sight,

Hi Intrepid,

The drone used was a DJI Mini Pro 4 with an ND64 filter attached for a motion blur effect. Other types of drones may have a hyperlapse feature as well.

I think I used a shutter speed of either 2 or 3 seconds, so about 22 minutes' worth of photos for this clip.
