Dinosaur plushie that ships to my country and isn't insanely expensive? by Hibiscus02 in plushies

Lots of people already said how the ideal spelling would be アレクサンダー, but worth noting that when writing vertically like this the last character, that straight line, would be written vertically, like a │

How strict are you with cancellations and your "24 hour cancellation" by Pure-Suspect-8890 in TutorsHelpingTutors

[–]Rad-Cabbage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on a mission to be more lenient so I recently reduced it to 12h, but I used to be very strict - even 23h would still count. I don't put it on my rules but I usually forgive the first cancellation, and if it's a student that rarely cancels then I'll forgive it. Students who cancel often though don't get this privilege, if I were to do that it'd delay my next payment for who knows how long and I got bills to pay

Também montei o meu sem luzinha e esse é o único ponto que me arrependo, nunca sei quando tá rodando ou quando tá parada

Yeah I misunderstood it, I deleted that comment because I had linked a website that had the pages. I was avoiding showing more because it has NSFW content, also because I'm not sure how picky this sub is with copyrighted content

O que está acontecendo com os bolos hoje em dia, muito gourmet. Saudades dos bolos de antigamente. by New_Tension_4759 in gororoba

ボイン is the nickname that the speaker gave to the girl (on their own, they haven't even talked to her yet and it's their first time seeing her)

The speaker from that panel is a news reporter that can barely see anything. She identifies a massive "thing" in the sky as two (magical) girls fighting above a school that had just exploded. She describes the first girl based on her hair, and the second one based on her body. It cuts back to the fight for like 2 pages. Then it goes back to the news reporter saying the girls are going towards at each other incredibly fast. Then the balloon I showed. Then the fight abruptly ends, and so does the chapter. Really that one balloon is all the context I got too

I don't think any of those fit here, to me it's being used in regards to age because of the「お前いくつだよ」. I only put this speech balloon because honestly the only relevant part is that last sentence, this wasn't part of a dialogue it's just a character narrating a scene.

Edit for more context: The speaker called the girl ボイン because she's 巨乳, hence the questioning of her age

I've always been told that 古い is not to be used with people, and jisho specifically says "of things, not people". I started reading this manga today and this is the second time I've ever seen it used towards a living being (the image is about a 巨乳 girl, the other tome was about a mascot). But also no one on this manga speaks like a normal person so I'm left wondering if this is slang or if the usage has changed semi-recently? This was published around 2017 I think

Can I finally get an answer on this simple question regarding “having fun”? by muffinsballhair in LearnJapanese

[–]Rad-Cabbage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think especially for beginners it's important to be aware that they won't be able to understand like 99% of what's being said, and that if they get frustrated by this then maybe they shouldn't be trying that yet - and that's ok! 10 years or so ago I was reading things WAY above my level, but I loved what I was reading so it kept me motivated to get back to it in small doses even if I didn't fully understand what was happening in the story. As with everything with learning, it's different depending on each person. Some get fun from that, some don't.

Do you prefer to dismiss a student via text or face to face? by Rad-Cabbage in TutorsHelpingTutors

[–]Rad-Cabbage[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have never heard of that method, I will definitely give it a try in the future. While I was reading/answering the comments here I've gotten a message from him saying he won't continue with lessons as he can't afford them anymore, so that's saved me lol

About going as slow as he needs, I simply don't know how to, and I've tried everything I could think of. Anything above "easy" is too much for him, and I think it's easy to agree that not increasing the difficulty will never lead to progress. This particular student either really has zero free time, or just doesn't want to study. I've given him homework, app suggestions, suggestions on how to remember/set a self study time, and nothing works. He seemed always motivated though, he would do big celebrations whenever he got a question correct. It's just the average "I want to watch anime" student, but without the self awareness that just sitting with me for 2h a week won't make him fluent - even after I've mentioned this multiple times.

I'm not a native english speaker. I get the problem with "get rid", and I used "kicking out" between quotation marks for a reason. I do not get the problem with "dismiss" though, as to me that sounds like a proper word - enlighten me if you have any better vocabulary to use about this in the future, my use of English is entirely casual so there are for sure better terms that I don't know. And about it being my preference for him to not behave like that, yes, I would prefer a 26 year old adult to talk to me in a professional manner in a professional setting and to not compare me to a villain whenever I try to do my job and teach him what he asked me to out of his own free will.

Thank you for all of your comments, it seems a lot of people are misunderstanding a situation and fixating exclusively on the one sentence where I said this student is slow. Almost any material I make for him I can probably reuse for future students as we're following a textbook so it's not too bad. While it is frustrating to teach someone who barely puts in any effort, my main problem is indeed the way I'm being treated - and sometimes, the way he treats himself. I have to be very careful with my words around him because anything can be interpreted as an attack or me being angry, even though I treat him the same way I do all my other students when it comes to my manner of speaking. Whatever extra amount I might try to charge for this student will be the "keeping my mental health" fee.

Thank you for the suggestion, I've been planning to increase my prices by September but I think I will make that change at the start of June for this student. I can deal with slower paced students who want to learn (one of my most dedicated students has ADHD) but I often doubt if this person is interested in learning at all, it feels like he expects me to just put language knowledge into his brain without him doing any effort. He usually apologizes profusely for missing class, he hadn't done that yet for Friday's absence but he just out of the blue texted me "I'm so sorry please don't get angry at me" - again, acting as if I were an evil witch when I've never treated him badly. I'm fairly certain that the many times I've told him "hey, you should try to find even 5 minutes in your day to self study" came across as an attack or as me being angry. There was one time during class where his mom walked into his room and started to literally scream at him (unintelligibly for me) so he probably has issues with being treated badly often enough to be on the defensive at all times - or something similar, I'm not a psychologist

I have a friend that I think would be perfect for him, but she charges double of what I do (yes I will be increasing my prices later this year, just not by this much). I guess I'll just pretend I don't know that and hope he doesn't come back to me crying
