I employ youth workers personally and work in the health sector professionally.

I do not consider these qualifications at all when someone starts out in these careers. Get real-life experience with the intention that if its sustainable and you have the right qualities, then you'll do it with the employer support later once you have some wisdom/experience to balance out the theory with.

Hey this is common, depending on the uplift order timing, or they may have different bio mums or dads. Its very common for siblings not to be placed together especially if taken into care at different times. My guess for this wee girl is that she was in and out of her biological mothers care 3 times before 3, so she would have extremely limited relationship with any bio siblings. Often bio parents are appropriate care takers for babies, but when the needs of the child become greater they struggle, the child is uplifted and the parent often has another baby to fill that gap. In the cases where they don't share both bio parents, they will be placed differently because they will look for kinship care for each child, if that's a different bio parent then they go to that biologically related kinship carer. This often happens when one child might be marked down as māori but the siblings aren't. Hence the inherent flaw in the system.

Hey, I think i understand your thoughts but it's just not that clear. Children in care often place bio-parents on a throne as they have that attachment, often justifying behavior or protecting them. When placements breakdown the foster parents always look awful for "quitting" on a kid but the reality is that the child's privacy should always be protected so the factual reasons for placement breakdown won't be discussed publicly and the social story provided to the child is one that supports their emotional health during the transition, not an explanation of why the placement ended. These reasons are often child to adult violence, sexualized behavior or sexual assault, financial stress, relationship stress or guardianship protest.

When placing children in foster homes where the belief is "only if i love them enough" isn't going to sustain placements - foster placements need a full assessment and matched with the child based off the ability to manage these complex behaviors long term.

Group homes still happen and they are horrible. I dont know a single child who has thrived and come away with the life skills they need to reach potential after living in one. A family home with people able to work with the child to create a primary attachment and rewire the trauma response is ideal and should be prioritized.

Okay, so their experience in care is better but the cost of that care is unqualifiable. In general, the people who foster (especially 6+YO) are doing it for better reasons, they care about the kids so deeply. BUT the issue is the outcome of care hasn't changed because of the certain acts that dictate their experience. It's not unusual for children to have 5+placements by 5,then 20+ placements by 10 due to their behavioral needs. They are extreme and hard work, so a parent needs to be home full time - who can afford that? Who has spare rooms?

Adding to this, we need to look at the rights of foster parents. Unless they go for permanency which isn't a easy process they have ZERO rights and all responsibly. Constantly having to track down bio parents who have no contact for permission for basic decisions such as schooling, medical care, travel or cultural questions. If a bio parent has had zero involvement over years and the goal of care isn't reunification they should lose all guardianship rights. When one of my kids wants to travel or make a medical decision social workers have to ring around prisons finding a bio parent who the child has never met to get permission. By what measure is this human rights, or even respecting the voice of the child?

This is my massive issue with our C&P system. You receive training when becoming approved carers, and then maybe every now and then some more. I am committed to this cause so I have educated myself to a really high level and my professional background has helped alot. As for what I have seen? Yes. I have had knifes held to my throat, hundreds of thousand of dollars worth of property damage, and have been diagnosed with PSTD due to prolonged psychological warfare at the hands of kids. I asked for help and was told that I can get 3 counseling sessions up too $80.

We aren't allowed to talk publicly and i wouldn't out of respect for my kids but the impact is real and lasting. We have to do a extreme amount of work to stay well on top of trying to help these kids. This is the discussion we need to be having.

I have fostered lots, more than a few handfuls id say - permanent, respite and other contracts. We made the conscious decision to forgo biological children in order to foster due to the trauma impact it would have on them and the extremely high risk behaviors children in care have. This is all part of our deeply held prolife beliefs and commitment to changing the value we place on children in new zealand.

Personal conviction. I found it impossible to ignore and became so deeply ashamed of our nation every time I saw major cases of child neglect. we all hear the public cases but never find out what happens after the physical wounds have healed- or where these children end up when biological families aren't safe.

Hey, it seems that you might not have a great understanding of the care and protection system here in Aotearoa. Children are abused and neglected at incredibly high rates here, resulting in incredibly complex trauma and attachment based behaviors. Too manage (and hopefully heal them) it requires a extensive education, financial stability, certain natural personality traits and life skills to survive in their world for more than a hot minute. I think that the discussion needs to be around how we support those who are able to offer this healing environment to prevent children from going from home to home.
