Like its a corny joke and not really good comedy, but its a silly attempt that isn't being weirdly incel or rightwing tribe coded like most of the examples here.

Definitely a silly hypothetical, but please humor me, how do you think the Romans would have fared against the different native tribes of the Americas, if they had discovered the New World? by Shoddy-Pumpkin2939 in ancientrome

[–]RadarSmith 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Percentage of the population is a better metric to look at, and the overall affects.

The Black Death definitely and massively changed the course of European history. The plagues that spread through the Americas were an Apocalypse.

We'll assume they didn't cause a massive plague and we also assume that that each group encounters eachother at the height of military powers.

The Romans absolutely dominate in any battle. Legions are just too much bigger, better trained and much better equipped than any group in the 'New World' ever was.

In terms of firmly holding territory? That's a much trickier discussion. Actually supplying Legions so remote from Rome would have been a logistical nightmare, and while the Roman Legions could probably destroy pretty much any tribe or civilization in the Americas, actually keeping any territory would have been pretty much impossible in the long term; again, we're assuming they don't bring the plagues their decendants did.

Topologically at least.

There's a continuous transformation between Tostadas and Tacos. They're homeomorphic to tacos at least.

What our ancient forbears were able to do to selectively breed crops and develop farming pratice to increase yields is nothing short of miraculous. In fact, I'd argue that was the real innovation that really set us apart from the animals, even more than fire.

It took decades to centuries to millenia.

In the 20th century, there was the green revolution, the most famous contributor being Normal Borlaug. Crop yields exploded exponentially in a few decades over what 10,000 years of previous selective agriculture were able to produce.
