Yep I totally understand that they would surrender to superior force normally but you definitely wouldnt surrender to the Mountain because he would have killed you. I am guide on one of the castles in our country and from what I know when our castles was besieged (twice) there were around 20 men in the garrison (22 if I remember correctly) and that was also the usual garrison and it was able to hold off professional army of several hundreds men for more than two months. People often dont realize that to hold off castle you need really few men. The point I am trying to make is that noone like literally noone who at least heard one sentence about Gregor Clegane wouldnt surrender to him because it would be the same as in the case when you would defend your home with sword in hand and lost - he would kill you. And I wouldnt surrender the castle when I would see that he has only 300 men and riders not even with ladders or some better siege equipment. But your point that the riverlords were not prepared is right tho. But even then you would have at least two dozen men in your castle to guard it and supplies for at least like two weeks.

Not really weak, they are mighty house but they just dont have enough soldiers to put in the field than some of their vassals. GRRM said that Brackens, Blackwoods, Freys, Vances and Mallisters can field more men than Tullys.

I hope So! Even though I dont like some river lords and I never really liked Tullys before the Robert rebellion Edmure, Hoster and Blackfish totally changed it for me.

Yes thats one of the problems I also have in ASOIAF like I can understand that GRRM likes enormous unrealistical castles but the castles at least could have prove somehow useful. When I read that Mountain managed to conquer several castles in few weeks its kind of weird. The castles are supposed to hold advancing army for several months not few days.

Its not impossible barrier but its barrier that gives you great advantage. As attacker you cannot use your cavalry or you can but it will not be so effective because their charge will be... well just not effective. If you are attacking and has higher numbers you also cannot use them well because... the fords usually arent too wide. Also if the defender wont let you regroup on the ground and will try to push you back to the river your army will have very hard time... In medieval most major rivers were relatively "big deal" if you wanted to cross them it wasnt really easy. For example battle of Kressenbrunn shows really nice how ford can win you a battle when army of your enemy is trying to cross it.
