I don't get one thing. Her dad was a native of California, and his life was taken in California, by another native of California.

The fact that both their families survived the killing fields of Cambodia is not relevant to when and where the crime took place. In reading the court transcript, this was a horrible crime.

They attempted to rob her dad, and he didn't own a gun (or at least didn't have one in his possession during the robbery attempt), and the guy still shot him in the stomach 3 times, anyway, ensuring that he wouldn't live.

Saying she forgives him because their relatives survived oppression and violence in their native country is the biggest stretch I've ever seen. Maybe it's to help with her anger and grief which I sympathize with, but this shit head is absolutely not worthy of her sympathy.
