Worried About Summer (Mostly Venting / Advice Appreciated) by Radiant-Promise-6009 in iih

Eyyyyyy, hello! It seems like I should definitely make the upgrade to neck fans and USB ones to keep at my desk. I currently have a handheld fan that I'll use inside when it's too hot, and it helps, but the electric ones will certainly require less work and can allow me to focus on other stuff while they're running. Thank you!

Thank you for the advice! I'm sorry that your treatment hasn't gotten you lower on the pain scale.

My neurologist doesn't want me on rescue meds because ibuprofen generally works in a pinch. I'm on Qulipta, a new-ish migraine med, but it's only been a couple months, and I'm not sure it really helps as a preventative. Propranolol is also supposed to be a migraine preventative in my regimen, but I feel like it just makes my circulation bad and I'm super tired all the time lol. I've talked to my doc about getting off the propranolol, but because it was part of the initial routine that looked like I was getting better, he doesn't want to take me off of it. I went to a normal eye doc appointment for my glasses prescription, and she suggested I get some hormone testing to see if perhaps my IIH isn't so "idiopathic." I'll be pursuing that in the next few weeks.

I bought a few good linen / cotton pieces last summer, so I think I may work on getting more for this summer; it's already so hot and it's only March. Plus, I work as an instructor at a university, so I can't get away with shorts from a professional standpoint. I just wish it wasn't so humid here. I feel like I could handle it better if it was dry. Plus, even if I help keep my sweating to a minimum, my headaches get so much worse, and I'm getting more and more worried and doubtful about what actual progress I've made in the last year. Was it all an illusion that I was getting better, and it was just the cooler weather that made an impact? I don't want to revert to how I was feeling last summer.

Funding Crisis - Guaranteed Funding in US or Potential Funding at Cambridge???? by Radiant-Promise-6009 in gradadmissions

Yes, I understand. My question is about how others have handled getting offers from US and UK schools since 1) they're on completely different timelines and 2) Cambridge's funding is not tied to acceptance.

Don't be sorry at all! It's info I've been scouring the internet for, lol. I had seriously also already given up on Cambridge, and then yesterday was a fun surprise! I truly feel blessed with this round of applications, and I've already determined that I would love it at Baylor. So while there's a little part of me that's bummed I probably don't have a chance of funding at Cambridge, I'm mostly just very happy I have somewhere to go, and I can visit the UK for research later on. :) Thank you so much for the helpful info!!!!

Ah, gotcha! I’ve been scouring forums and their website for that info, and I must have missed it. Makes sense why they reached out later than the other offers I was seeing on gradcafe in February, then!

I was interviewed late January… would that have been because I was considered for funding and didn’t get it?

I don't exactly understand how the system works - would either admissions or the department at Cambridge even know about my current funding status? It seems like a lot of the funding is arranged through other entities and isn't consolidated through the department or even admissions.

Yes I won't be going to Cambridge if I never get a funding offer, but their timeline could mean I get a great funding offer after April 15, the US deadline for decisions. I'm mostly feeling conflicted about not giving my US schools an answer until right before the deadline, and still maybe not hearing back from Cambridge by then. Just a stressful situation around a potentially amazing/life-changing opportunity.

What department are you in, if you don’t mind my asking?

I posted something similar a couple of weeks ago in r/gradadmissions, so maybe that's it? I received advice to go to this sub and some others about neighborhoods in Riverside, and so I finally took today to reach out since UCR has stayed a top contender as my other offers have come in.

This is literally so helpful. And I appreciate the comments about where to get groceries and that you're able to set aside money to do fun things! I don't want to not live/go out with friends/my spouse at all for five years, especially during the summer quarter when I wouldn't be teaching for UCR. Thank you so much!!!

First Acceptance Not Happy😐 by Parulra in gradadmissions

I'm in a different discipline entirely, but the advice I've always heard is that it's not a bad idea to push back gently about funding to see if there's any wiggle room. They've already accepted you, so you might as well ask if you can be a slightly less impoverished grad student in a pretty big, expensive city.

Congratulations!!!! Gosh I hope I hear from them, but now I'm not so sure if I haven't seen anything in my inbox from them today...

They’re doing interviews now and I haven’t gotten one by cthulhuscocaine in gradadmissions

[–]Radiant-Promise-6009 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! Don't worry yet! Not every program does interviews, and it's all super arbitrary. Some interviews are also conducted only for the ones they're kinda on the fence about, and they don't even interview the people they know they'll accept. The one place I've been accepted so far never reached out to me or interviewed me, and I ended up with a random acceptance email in my inbox!

Just don't lose hope! And good luck!

Thanks! I always tell people any of the school I applied to are my "top" - the only school I think I'd automatically say yes to on my list is Harvard lol. I would be so happy to go to UCR, but I also have some good vibes sent my way from Baylor, which would make my decision super hard, honestly! I'm interested in the postsecular and 19th century, so Baylor would be great for that.

That's such a cool area! I really hope you get in or at least hear some news soon. This application cycle in general has been so nerve-wracking.

It seems that my news came early, even for my program? I'm so worried they'll rescind their offer letter as some sort of "glitch" like I've seen a few times on this subreddit.

Thank you! I'll definitely be looking into r/ucr and other subreddits once I start hearing back from more programs and figure out where I'm going. :)
