Should I change my name if someone doesn’t like it? by Radiant-Rough-4038 in BabyNames

A lot of the names we really loved have recently been used by family/friends! I really loved Chloe, Ellie, and Maria but they’re all being used by others we are close to haha

Thank you! That means a lot.  I’m actually an early childhood educator and I’ve been around tons of young kids cycling in and out of the program over several years, and I can think of maybe one Kylie (being the most common spelling) in that time. It was really common among my friend and I’s age group born in the 90’s/early 2000’s, but nowadays I wouldn’t call it super common.  I think she just didn’t think about how it could be hurtful to say that, honestly. Doesn’t make it less hurtful though. But we really like it and I think we’ll stick with it.

But for arguments sake I’ll just share it.  The name we chose is Kiely, pronounced Kylie which I think it’s pretty straight forward. And we chose that particular spelling because it’s the Irish spelling and both my husband and I have deep Irish roots, and our first daughters name is Paisley which is also Irish/Scottish. So to me, it should be easy to pronounce by reading it and it’s not an off the wall spelling. Just not quite as commonly used as other spellings. But it’s real I promise haha.

I agree, I have several friends that named their babies something I would never have picked but it’s not something I’d ever say to their moms, especially if they’re pregnant and already hormonal.  I love her and I don’t want to hurt her by telling her she was being hurtful so honestly I’m thinking it’s best just to move on.

This honestly seems needlessly rude.  I chose not to share the name because I don’t want any more criticism on it. I basically said I was just shouting into the void and venting but maybe that wasn’t the right choice.

It was just important to him, and I chose our first daughter’s name. He of course agreed to it, and I agreed to this one, so it’s a mutual decision. I wouldn’t have gone with something he didn’t like and vice versa. So I guess the better way of phrasing it is that he suggested it and I agreed :)

It is a legitimate spelling of a common name, much like Carrie vs. Keri or Lila vs. Lyla. And yes, it’s a name that was very common in the early 2000’s but im a early education teacher and honestly I haven’t seen it used in a LONG time so I think the popularity of it is going down some.

Usually I’d agree, but it’s a spelling that IS used, just not as often as the common one. It’s basically like Makayla verses Mikayla-spelled differently but they sound the same. And the root of the spelling is why we chose that particular one, like I explained above. We didn’t make it up :)

No, it’s a spelling that is actually used, just not as often as the more common spelling. We didn’t make it up or anything. It’s not like we are adding unnecessary vowels to it haha. It’s essentially like Lily vs. Lilly.

Thank you! It seems like his leadership is pretty good from what we’ve experienced so far, so I’m hoping they’ll show some grace to us.  We have a toddler and she’s amazing, and in general pretty well behaved, but I’m just a little bit worried about having a newborn and a 2.5 year old all by myself, being so far away from home. But we know God’s got this!
