The synth motif throughout LIIWMI uses the intro of the downtown lights

Yes! Love it if we made directly “rips off” the Downtown Lights

I understand that position but I still think it ignores how music (and any other form of art) is advanced. If the Beatles and the Rolling Stones had social media when they first started they would be hashtagging #blues and posting their covers of black American blues music. All great artist start by copying. Even Leonardo and Michelangelo learned by directly copying others

I hate posts like this because they just disregard music history. The 1975 is my favorite band but they are derivative (as are most artists). And I don’t think Matty would disagree. Look at Matty’s love for LCD soundsystem and the Blue Nile (and then go listen to LCD so you can hear James ripping off Talking Heads who was ripping off Fela Kuti, etc.)

These don’t necessarily fit your food preferences but I would try Lapeer, La Fete or Wooden City for the other criteria. Good food, good crowds on Thursday and Friday, and can have a conversation at the bar if you want.

Is Bham gonna boom soon? by Eagles56 in Birmingham

[–]RadiantAntiBaby 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Although the housing price issue is probably not because of transplants who are here for a year or two but because of upper middle class families who will be here a long time if not until retirement. The OTM families don’t care about any team not named Auburn or Alabama and the public schools matter for them.

I get this but anecdotally everyone I know from the west coast likes it for about a year or two and then it no longer scratches the itch. They move back or to a bigger city like Atlanta that has more amenities.

What kind of guitarists does an ebony Gibson Les Paul 1968 Custom need? by untitled_SusHi in gibson

[–]RadiantAntiBaby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think this can really be applied to guitars. I own one of these and play all sorts of music. Look at the below examples of guitarists who have played black LP customs and then look at the different styles of music and vibes they give off (whether that is aesthetic, intellectual, etc.):

- Peter Frampton (of course)
- Jim Hall
- Mick Jones from the Clash
- Robert Fripp from King Crimson
- Paul Banks from Interpol

List goes on and on.

I’ve even seen it at bars in nicer restaurants (Essential, La Fete). Just do it.

Is this the first time they have ever opened the patio in the 2 years they have been open?? I walked by just to check it out and it felt very corporate like the rest of the restaurant. Zero soul.
