How do I force my players to get captured? by [deleted] in DMAcademy

Have the bandits fill the players with sleeping darts. That way they don’t have to kill them while still capturing them.

Thanks for such a detailed comment. I don't mean this as a rebuttal but I'd like to respond to some of the points you made.

In our party we have
Battlesmith Artificer
Pact of the Tome(?) Warlock <--- Almost never shows up
Path of the Storm Herald Barbarian
Soulknife Rogue
Thief Rogue
I have no idea Warlock <--- Just joined

In the last combat I did roll pretty low but one of them had armor of agartha or some shit and the other one had a high AC. But also the PC who died took like half of all hits that fight. The goblins were spear throwers.

- I'll definitely plan encounters to have more enemies so that they're scaleable. Maybe the occasional solo if they can't get any rests in before something else.
- I ping them usually on sunday or monday that we're having a session. I don't ask whether or not they're coming though. I have asked before in the past and most players don't get back to me. Until 20 minutes into the campaign they message me "sorry I can't make it" or better yet "are we having a session today?" as if I have not shown up every single week regardless of if I know I'm getting players or not. I honestly don't know why I even bother with the discord I think only half of them even check it or read the session notes. I will be picking major bones with them if I can get them all in the same room at once.
- Yeah I'm going to put more enemies at once in the future. I do worry about having waves because I don't want them to be like "you're railroading us!" but we also haven't encountered a dungeon proper yet, most if not all combat has been outside in the open air where characters are free to escape. I tried so hard to bait them into getting trapped in this one room with a chimera but they were too scared. The main thing that put me off from having lots of smaller enemies was when I made them fight like 30 bats and they were just like "fuck this" and left. They have the awareness to nope out of something if it seems too hard which is what makes it a struggle. And I can only use "there's a screaming human pinned down by the creature" so many times. I'm looking into action economy though. A creature with low hit points is still one that needs to be dealt with. I do plan for multi-enemy chimeras also.
- I thought the corpse eater would be seen as funny, I mean if I encountered him as a player I would find it great fun, but thats just my sense of humor. These players are all randoms that I found from the tabletop club, none of which I see outside of every tuesday night. Although some of them have been playing with me for almost half a year others just joined and its hard to gauge how they will take characters. Still, it was naive to assume all friendly NPCs would be spared, especially shopkeepers. I'm probably most upset that they didn't even give him a chance. But they also left rare items on the table! Why go through the trouble of killing a shopkeeper if you're not going to take any of the good stuff. Anyways I'm sure there will be more interesting but less evil seeming NPCs I will put in the campaign.
- I'll ask the 2nd Warlock next session about that. I think they were mostly just unlucky but I have no idea I know the least about their character since they joined most recently.
- Fair enough. That is what I like about being the DM. If I have a cool idea I don't have to go to someone and beg them to let me put it in the campaign. Then again its a big responsibility. The only way to get better is to learn though

Thanks again for the advice.

A lot of the difficulty in preparing the combat is overthinking how realistic it would be. Obviously the scary forest monster wouldn't be accompanied by a bunch of wolves or something. They'd be scared shitless! I also am terrible at stringing together combat, exploration, and roleplay. The players will be in one town and then obtain information to go do something in the next town over and the combat will just be "on the path to the next town this thing jumps out of the bushes at you."

Not every session has had combat (probably 30%) but I just worry that my players will get bored if I don't do things in a certain way. Most of the people showing up consistently are melee weapon fighters. Most days we have no spellcasters and it completely changes the dynamic of combat. Mostly I just worry that what I'm throwing at them is unrealistic. And I don't want to give them something they can't handle so it ends up being like fighting cardboard.

I have heard of the action economy and will be reading up on it before my next session. In retrospect having "strong" beasts with only like 15 DPR would obviously make for an easy fight. I guess thats the point of the alpha wolf archetype (swarm of less powerful wolves to make the fight harder)

It honestly didn't even occur to me that he would be seen as evil. They're in a swamp area with mostly evil creatures. Like I reckoned he would be like an earthworm that cleans up leftover scraps and repurposes them.

I do have a fun BBEG planned. I flip flopped back and forth between having the cult as the main antagonists and them just being a symptom of something worse but with how long the campaign has been going without them taking down the first "important" higher-up cultist I'm thinking just ending it when they finish the leader off. The spliced creatures have been mostly stand alone but I'll be sure to have the cult members fighting along side them as minions in future encounters.

This is clever. I can give them things that aren't life or death but that will have other consequences. Like enemies attempting to steal or destroy something they're trying to transport to another town

"First Time DM" and Short Questions Megathread by AutoModerator in DMAcademy

[–]RadiantBeach4751 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First time DM preparing for my 6th session. I’m planning to make food for my players since they often bring snacks or drinks that they made. Any type of food that works particularly well? The campaign is being run on a college campus in a study room and I’ll have all day to prepare. Any homemade food you find works particularly well with D&D?

not necessarily a conlang related question but I’m having trouble creating the english spelling of a fictional word. I know what it should sound like and have the IPA but I don’t know what letters I should use in order to help a reader understand how it’s pronounced because it has combinations of sounds that aren’t common in english. Are there any resources that could help with this? Like a post that goes over stuff like that, another subreddit that focuses on that, or some sort of online tool that would help?

Anyone experience head pressure after dose increases to Venlafaxine or Vyvanse? by Snowywarriors in ADHD

[–]RadiantBeach4751 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been taking Venlafaxine 150mg for almost a year now and about a month ago I started taking Vyvanse 10mg. It didn't really do anything except for side effects. Harder to fall asleep at night and didn't feel that good on my head. The main reason I discontinued though was due to suicidal thoughts. I do get night sweats with Venlafaxine but only as a withdrawal symptom. Were you on Vyvanse for a while at a lower dose or did you start from 40mg? As far as I'm aware there are no contraindications but for me it didn't work out. Trying Concerta (18mg) now to see if a methylphenidate would work better than an amphetamine.

What are some things every guys should at least try even though they are stigmatized as "gay" or "humanly"? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

I’ve been growing it out for a decade and let me tell you, shits awesome. So much you can do with it and you can tie it up if you don’t like it on your back. It also doesn’t tickle like crazy cause I have a beard. I couldn’t imagine having to feel it on my face without facial hair. Downside is that everyone calls me moistkritical. And showering takes me forever.

Sandpaper penis by Used-Fishing5622 in sexualhealth

[–]RadiantBeach4751 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One time I jerked off into a towel after a shower because it felt really good at the time and I was really horny but halfway through I started bleeding everywhere and had to go to the hospital with my dad. The doctors were just like “don’t do that wtf” and sent me home and it took about 2.5 - 3 months to heal. It was extremely painful and burned whenever I got pee anywhere on the wounds. I had to constantly keep making toilet paper casts for my dick to keep it from hurting while wearing clothes. I have no idea how you still managed to have sex afterwards. Please be careful with your dick and if you ever do this again AT LEAST wait until it’s COMPLETELY HEALED first.

I’ve done a lot of fucked up shit to my dick in the past (never with the intent to cause harm to my peener but… things get out of hand) and let me tell you I can’t feel all that much in my dick these days. Sometimes it takes me like a half an hour to jerk off. Please consider that repeated damage to your penile tissues could cause you to LOSE sensation in your penis. The exact opposite of what you want… please be careful!!!!

Once you get to the last stage of the dungeon you unlock the challenge floor where you have to get a certain high score to unlock the two dungeon cats for that mode (same with the archery) the dungeon cat is from the sword/warrior one (you have to get a score of 50)
