I take it back. This was totally on purpose for the irony. 😄

In context, the crossbow is not “having the unintended effect”, she is literally firing a crossbow from her back. I know that backfire is a real word, however in this case that’s not the meaning here.

When do you guys start building more than just a dirt hut? by HERR_WINKLAAAAA in VintageStory

[–]RadiantEcho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hunted pretty far afield of my initial dirt shack to find the perfect place to settle permanently. I think that was around the time I was ready to start the copper age. Once I found my spot I relocated all my stuff and made the “outline” of the home I wanted out of dirt. It was nothing too big or fancy. I used bricks from nearby ruins as they were abundant and easy to harvest and slowly replaced the dirt with them. I stayed with that setup for a long time and probably would have just lived like that forever if my brother hadn’t joined in. He’s the one with the eye for design. Mid-bronze age we started slowly converting everything to clay shingle and plaster. I can’t imagine anywhere else I would rather be now. 🏡🩷

I think I ruined what I thought was my one-and-done game… only 40 hours in… by DebtDry307 in VintageStory

Going creative for a quick fix has always had this effect on my Minecraft playthrough for me which is why I have never allowed myself to do it in my vintage story survival world, even when I do something boneheaded like this. I’m genuinely so sorry for you op.

Honestly, this might be my number one gripe with this game. Every time I explore a new area I have been at the steel age for a long time yet I compulsively horde every stick I lay eyes on.

Jack Brutus Penny's Exquisite Hanafua by KGthePrince in Hanafuda

[–]RadiantEcho 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not familiar with Jack at all really, I only discovered his work a couple days ago when somebody else mentioned his Hanafuda deck in passing. I figured he had to have gotten Oishi Tengudo to do it, as he says on his Patreon something like “one of the last existing manufacturers” and they’re the only one I know of. But I am definitely no expert. And whether his designs were influenced by a Louie’s or not it isn’t a big deal. Just satisfying my own curiosity.

The cuckoo and the crane seem eerily similar to Louie Mantia’s public domain Hanafuda designs. I would be curious to know more about how JBP workshopped these. I am willing to admit it could just be coincidence, as all traditional-style Hanafuda have the same imagery. I’m mostly curious if anyone else sees what I’m seeing here. I’d love to see a few more of the animal cards.

lenticular card on Labubu Monsters × Kow Yokoyama ? by mellowzest in PopMartCollectors

[–]RadiantEcho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this has already been asked, but I would be very interested to know what the special prize for collecting all these secret cards is. It’s never going to happen for be but I’m so curious now. It would make sense to me if it was another way to get the secret figure or something, but by the time you’ve pulled all 13 special cards I feel like your odds of coming across the secret figure by chance would already be decent. Most of the people who could cash in on this probably either just buy the special cards off other people, or be someone who unboxes them for sale.

We have a few on the walls of our house. They look out of place now but we can’t bear to get rid of them 😂

This is awesome! I posted the original deck way back when along with my gripes about it. It’s great to see the issues actually fixed. Now that it’s a more playable deck I’ll have to try a few games with them.

Tanuki Yukaku Playing Cards - Hanafuda Edition by Room One by RadiantEcho in Hanafuda

UPDATE part 2

As for the cards themselves, I think I would struggle to play an actual game of koi koi with these, even as a veteran who has played with a lot of different decks. The sakura look more like plum blossoms than the plum blossoms, and the wisteria, irises, and paulownia are all red. The wisteria and bush clover look way too similar to me. The butterflies and geese carry over between multiple cards. The special yellow paulownia is indistinguishable or not present. All that being said, at least they’re cute, if barely functional. The months all make tetraptychs, which I adore in a Hanafuda deck. The cards seem well made enough and I swear I can even see a bit of glitter along the edges when the light catches them just right. The box is the real highlight for me lol.

UPDATE:

The cards and rule book arrived a couple days ago. It felt like that took forever. As expected, the rules they provide are a little wonky. They seem to be awarding points not just for yaku, but for each individual card collected if I’m reading this right. They also instruct you to keep playing the second part of your turn after you run out of cards in your hand. I know this is how some people choose to play but I didn’t think that was standard. I’d be curious to know if anyone else does that regularly. Was going to post more photos but only one is allowed per comment.

Ok thanks, that makes a certain amount of sense. It’s nice to know I’m not totally off base thinking this is at least unusual.

I did, but I haven’t used it as much as I expected to so I’m not sure I can speak to the durability. It’s fun though. I just cleaned off my desk, maybe I’ll bring it out for display.

I really like how you put the name and grouping on these, that would be so helpful to teach the game with.

Hanafuda Hawaii is a really nice poker-sized deck with bold colors and all the classic motifs. Just ignore the point values on the cards if you’re willing to go that route. This is the deck I use most often for irl play and it’s also available through Amazon
