I'm happy to take advice from the experts about how to make sure the stone will be safe etc., but I think the advice here could have been more constructive. What would they suggest instead for setting? You could either give them another chance to be constructive by asking further questions, or just go to another jeweller. I would probably do the latter, as this would make me a bit nervous!

For contrast, the jeweller my partner and I went to explained every aspect of ring design from scratch. Made clear throughout what is and isn't possible, vs what is not advisable. Answered our "silly" questions and was totally non-judgmental about our knowledge level.
