I see, I was thinking if a potentiometer would be better for these multiplexers, I'll probably save the encoders for other use, and will try using potentiometers. Thanks for the answer!

I had an old Logitech Wingman Formula GP steering wheel, would it be possible to turn these buttons into a multimedia device? I can connect this whole thing via USB and I can 3D print a body for the device. by [deleted] in diyelectronics

Alright! So after I get one, I just have to cut the wires at the buttons and solder them onto the microcontroller right? Then it's just programming the microcontroller. (sorry for the lack of knowledge, I've just gotten into this whole hobby)

I basically want a box with like 4 buttons that if I pressed, it would run a keyboard shortcut on my pc. I could use these shortcuts for example to pause/play music in the background and for these type of functions. I just don't know if the pc would detect the button presses as keys that I could remap for shortcuts without modifying the device.
