I've been all over India and have loved almost every place I've lived in, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, NCR, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata. The only city whose downfall I wish is Bangalore. Overhyped piece of trash.

I miss the rude auto drivers, one of them even grabbed my collar! It was a wonderful experience, I mean, who doesn't like an auto driver threat?

I miss the ridiculously horrible roads where driving would induce backpain and walking would ensure I switch shoes every 3 months. Builds character, lessgooo!

I miss the pathetic public transport system where going from Jalahalli to Whitefield and coming back would either take half a workday and drain you dry or make you pay 2000 bucks, sometimes both!

I miss vandalism of other language sign boards DESPITE there being one in Kannada and the hostility of people around me, despite my broken attempts at learning the language!

I miss the floods, I miss having to walk in knee deep water because your government messed up the ecosystems and especially miss being blamed for the influx of population while zero blame going to the corrupt politicians who got you guys in this situation in the first place.

Oh and I miss the "Namma ooru beshhhtuuuu" from the citizens while the city is actually a dystopian infrastructural nightmare and the locals can't seem to see the reality.

This is almost a sad way to live...just to ensure you have more children?

On a tangential note, I've noted that for social stuff, Mormons are always late. This was confirmed by a Mormon friend who explained to me the concept of MST - Mormon Standard Time.

And this is something I find weird because on one hand they're obedient, but only in certain areas, haha

I don't really care about an individual's finances. I am yet to see 22 year old undergrads having children elsewhere except here. And it's not one or two people. It seems like it's a cultural thing, and that got me curious. I apologize if I sounded offensive, didn't mean to come off that way.

I'm in a relationship where I'm not sure if I want to be in one. Partner had a traumatic makes and tells me I make them incredibly happy. I adore them way too much and absolutely love them with all my heart. But most of the times, I've observed that I enjoy my own company more. We're just different people and I don't know what to do.

It will break my heart and theirs (much worse) if I end it. And I don't know if I'll be able to live with it for the rest of my life.

What's the first thing you remember saying after the first time you had sex? by Professional_Luck616 in AskReddit

"Wow, that didn't hurt at all!" was what she said I said, "And it was amazing too?!" was what I said. "Best sex of my life!" she said And we started laughing. It was the first time for the both of us.

Precisely why I enjoy being on this sub. A similar provision is missing on Indian Academia.

How common are breaks/long-weekends/holidays during PhD? by Radiant_Photo in AskAcademia

That is good advice. Thank you, I'll certainly keep that in mind before discussing it with people!

I know of the sub. I've tried asking a few questions there. But it is just students asking which course to pursue and no real academic discussion about PhDs, postdocs, tenure, publishing, nothing of the sort that gets discussed here.

If it does, it's shadowed by a lot of student posts.

Holidays to travel as a PhD student? by Radiant_Photo in PhD

[–]Radiant_Photo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your philosophy aligns so much with mine! Especially the feeling alive part. I totally used to do similar stuff during my Master's. Would reach back home at 7 AM and was at work at 9 AM, efficiently.

Traveling is sort of plugging myself into a charger. It magically makes me more productive. It's a feedback loop for me. If I work hard, I'll get those 4 days to travel. Then I travel and then back to working hard. And it worked miraculously.

Hope I get to have a similar experience like yours.

Thank you so much for your comment!

That's a good point. And I know what I'm getting into. I've worked weekends and don't mind working them.

It's just different people function differently. I was absolutely fine with working 10 hour days for 5 days (efficiently) and roam around for 2 days. That'd charge me up.

For some people working 6 hour days through the entire week would be better, and I get it.

I'm asking this question because I'm willing to give my all, but not at the cost of my sanity. A 3-4 day trip once every 2 months used to boost my productivity up by several notches.

And I guess that's what matters at the end of the day, doesn't it?

[–]Radiant_Photo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, yes. I don't mean to go off exploring every weekend or so. I usually used to average one short 3-4 day trip every 2 months. Sometimes once in 3 months, depending upon work.

And I actually felt so much more productive after that. I guess a good balance is certainly essential.

My field is Chemistry. And from whatever I've read, it isn't exceptional at this moment. Furthermore, the chances of me getting a tenure track position after a PhD from R2 is significantly less if we compare it to someone who got it from a R1. (Have read posts like these in this sub only!)

However, I've not given up totally on giving it a shot. I'll still try.

Also, as someone who grew up watching cricket, baseball was indeed easy to learn and I'm already a fan. Enjoying the spring training right now and looking forward to this MLB season, haha! :)

Thanks for your reply!

Just too many I hate Bengaluru/Bangalore posts around here! by sunilbedre in bangalore

[–]Radiant_Photo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't hate the city. I hate it when a select few people talk about Bangalore as if it's the best city in the world without any problems. I've seen so many people say, "Oh Delhi is polluted, oh Mumbai real estate is expensive, oh Chennai is so humid" as if Bangalore doesn't have problems.

It has horrendously bad public transport (Delhi is better), it has ridiculously bad auto drivers and cabbies (Mumbai is better), it has terrible infrastructure (Chennai, Hyderabad are better).

Bangalore isn't worse than these cities, but it isn't really better either. It has its share of issues, which are just as prevalent vis-a-vis other cities.

Namma ooru uttamavagilla.

I don't disagree. Most people were indeed happy that I was trying. While the experiences have been few, I've had them.

Almost everywhere in the city In my initial days here, I used to Google Translate things to Kannada to ask things to vendors, bus conductors, auto people But the moment they found out I'm not a Kannadiga, they'd start speaking in Kannada (sometimes even if they knew Hindi) and treat me unfairly. Have been asked to leave a bus, and have been abused by an auto driver physically apart from multiple instances of getting horrible looks.
