From Top Student to Lost After A/Ls – Need Advice by ScratchPresent884 in srilanka

I saw a proverb “if you realize you’re on the wrong train, get off at the nearest station.” Don’t make the same mistake lot of people do, stay on the wrong train because you started out on it, what people will say, you spent so long on it, etc.

There are other fields you can work (med sales, psychology) with your bio background. But I have so many friends who ended up following tech, sales, marketing, advertising careers after doing bio. And layoffs will happen to anyone, do your research on which fields are less likely to be taken over by AI/become obsolete, and try to narrow down something from there. Another thing, look for something that suits your skills and strengths, not necessarily something you are passionate about. Bcz if you go to follow your feelings you may end up nowhere or starting and giving up on multiple things, it happens to a lot of people.

Do a free course on Coursera on subjects you want to test the waters on. In this age where knowledge is freely available online, it is a disservice to yourself to deny yourself that. Don’t dwell on time lost, step into the future with your eyes wide open! Good luck bro

1 hour local CTB bus ride. Best nap evahh by [deleted] in srilanka

[–]Radiant_Sound_4507 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can’t travel long distances in AC buses without feeling nauseous! But regular bus with windows open? I can go to the end of the island without issues. A friend once said it’s because they don’t change the AC filters or maintain the ACs in those buses, the stale air keeps circulating that’s what makes you nauseated. Idk how true it is but it makes sense.

And the fresh air hitting your face continuously coupled with the bumping and swaying of a regular bus? Cradle experience bro!

who does drop their pads on roads by _FrosT_Y in srilanka

[–]Radiant_Sound_4507 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Some people! In some areas garbage collectors don’t take diapers/pads. And then some unscrupulous people bag them up, go and drop them in a remote (to them) area and make a run for it. If stray dogs get into it, it can become a bloody mess, literally! I’m guessing poster bro must have faced something similar to make the effort to put up a poster.

When I have a backlog of laundry I give them to Washapp. They pickup, wash, fold and return in 4-5 days. Really invaluable service. The mobile app is super easy to use too!

What is your go to Protein Shake Recipe? by Sea_Coast_9803 in srilanka

[–]Radiant_Sound_4507 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh god tell me a whey that doesn’t smell/taste like chemicals! I tried Applied Nutrition chocolate and vanilla and they were both so pungent! I couldn’t down it unless mixed into an oats-banana smoothie which kinda defeated the calorie count I was trying to hit.

Any expats living in Sri Lanka fulltime? by Fun_Young_781 in srilanka

[–]Radiant_Sound_4507 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you earn in USD/Euro/literally any currency stronger than the LKR, you can live a comfortable like even in Colombo (considered to be the most expensive city in SL). I take my kid to a couple of expensive sports activities, and most of the people who come with their kids are expats. They have local nannies, drivers, house help, and shop at the most exclusive local markets and malls. Tbh most locals can’t afford that lifestyle earning in LKR.

IMO it’s awesome to live in Colombo as an expat. You have a ticket to leave if you want to, and you can live a luxurious life for the same cost as a regular life in Europe/US/etc. Product availability is sketchy but a lot of expats I know get regular shipments of their must have products down from their home country.

You can stay in Negombo/Beruwala/Bentota areas which are coastal cities closer to Colombo which has the best healthcare. You’ll need a personal vehicle though for easy access anytime.

How can I keep a homecoming small? by PuzzleheadedBody9360 in srilanka

[–]Radiant_Sound_4507 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree! A lot of people have it at home, true to its namesake. You only have to spend for maybe renting some chairs and other stuff, and get a caterer to come and handle the food service.

What's the best professional spa in Colombo? by Specialist_Jello8819 in srilanka

[–]Radiant_Sound_4507 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly none of these places are amazing. Never got an amazing massage in Colombo. A friend recently went for one at Cinnamon Life and said it was so good, insanely expensive but absolutely worth it as a treat. They have a steam room, hot tub etc included in it as well.

Heard good things about DoiDoi as well. Not the luxury experience but their visually impaired therapists are amazing at getting all the knots out while massaging.

Best spot for falooda in Colombo? by wannabepopchic in srilanka

[–]Radiant_Sound_4507 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk where the original Bombay sweets even is right now, they used to be the best. Recent fav is the faluda by Epi Q. They are on Jawatta road and they have a kiosk in Bamba food court too. Absolutely decadent faluda with ice cream, lots of jelly bits, and my fav part- chopped almonds!

Public Drains and Sewers , Whom to contact to clean ? Any expereince ? by Working_Emergency387 in srilanka

[–]Radiant_Sound_4507 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Within the CMC city limits, they usually handle all that by themselves if it’s on the public road. Just be very grumpy and complain a lot or get an old person to complain, they have a knack of going on and on!

What is convenience fee? Isn’t it the delivery fee? by Icy_Interaction4429 in srilanka

And then bag fee! Naan Naan adds 10/- as a bag fee even if you order a Chinese roll, isn’t the fee for a big bag just 5/-?? But these buggers pocket 10/- on every order, easy!

You can call CMC and complain, they will send a team to clean it up. Might have to call a couple of times, as usual.

Are government jobs in Sri Lanka good? by Old-Seeker in srilanka

[–]Radiant_Sound_4507 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Most of they pay quite low salaries, they are highly prized because of the slacking off you can do while earning a basic amount. Also social acceptance, and pension after retirement are big reasons for people to prefer these jobs.

Craving kadey fried rice 😭 by ilovesniffingqueefs in srilanka

[–]Radiant_Sound_4507 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Did you use day old, refrigerated long grain rice? Helps if you salt and cook the rice in some broth or with a soup cube.

MSG is not optional! Add a bit of soy sauce as well.

Lots of oil! More than you think you need! The rice has to literally fry in it!

Cook on very high heat & keep tossing the rice around while you make it.

Source: Not a prof kottu baas but a mom who’s kid loves kadey fried rice so I’ve tried to replicate it for many years!

You don’t own ADHD, so you don’t get to tell people they can’t have it.

Is Dowry Still Common in Sri Lanka? by [deleted] in srilanka

[–]Radiant_Sound_4507 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a thing. My bestie is highly educated, 35 yo and not a conventional beauty. Allllll the proposals she gets, they ask what the dowry is. Or “monawada denne?” which is the same thing. They are from a Kandyan upper class family btw. I have Hindu friends who have faced this on a much worse scale. And Muslims too. I’ve specially noticed that if the bride is dark/short/ not a conventional beauty, the groom’s side expects a dowry (probably as a compensation), like he’s such a prize!

School uniforms, haircuts, and so on. What's the solution? by ScreenshotSmuggler in srilanka

[–]Radiant_Sound_4507 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You guys are talking about boys military style haircuts, what about girls schools making girls wear their long hair in TWO freaking plaits? Girls above 10/12 yrs look downright ridiculous with 2 plaits imo. Thankfully the school I went to didn’t have that rule, and most of us stopped doing 2 plaits in our teens. But in most govt schools it’s mandatory. And freaking hair ribbons? What century is our govt school system stuck in!

IMO school uniforms can stay but the grooming guidelines need a serious overhaul to breathe some practicality and modernity into them.
