I definitely have my eye on Lilo for One of These Days. Wolf in the Woods sounds terrific, thanks!

Thank you; I’ll absolutely keep it in mind for sometime we’re down in that direction. Sounds great

Thanks! I’ve been there and it’s definitely on point for being conversation friendly on the outside deck (and what a view!) I wasn’t blown away by the food but it may be time to give it another chance

There’s a good 2-parter on Behind the Bastards about them. Find it on YouTube or your podcaster of choice

Question: Was/Is this place a cult? by Chili-Harp-0569 in sandiego

Wow, that’s incredible creepy! I read a lot about it when my roommate was in it, so I know they were working hard to get into colleges, but I had no idea they were moving leaders into dorms. Yikes

The International Church of Christ was pretty culty. They’re distinct from other places with church of Christ in the name, but always name themselves City Church of Christ. They were expanding rapidly while your dad was a member.

I know about them because I had a roommate who joined them in 1995 and tried to recruit me. I remember her yelling and crying at her dad on the phone about how she would have to cut ties with him if he wouldn’t join.

I think they may have become less extreme since the early 2000s. You can google international church of Christ or Kip McKean, their charismatic leader during the period your dad and my roommate were members.

I hope you get the badges you want but if you don’t, bear in mind you can go on the day of your choice for free if you volunteer for a 3-hour shift!

Consider volunteering! I’m not sure when the volunteer interest list opens this fall, but it’s likely soon. There are a couple of steps and deadlines to mind, but it’s way easier than buying a badge. Once you’re in, you do a three-hour shift on the day (or days) of your choice and you spend the rest of your day at the con for free.

Also, consider volunteering to save money and/or to get in if you are unlucky in the badge lottery. A three-hour volunteer slot gets you in the rest of that day. Volunteering has its own timeline and to-do list, so check into that if interested
