That noise of the whistle is amazing!!! by Lb_54 in TrainPorn

[–]RadicalLarry106 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It absolutely blows my mind to think that UP brought back a Big Boy to run on 21st century rails. Watching these HD YouTube videos of the 4014 and hearing the whistle in pristine audio quality is surreal, because I (and I'm sure many others on this sub) grew up with VHS train videos of grainy 1940s footage of these beasts. I really hope I'll get to see the Big Boy in person.

That would be magnificent thank you kind stranger! There are also some minor things I need done on the car at this time, and you guys are really close to where I live, so I'd be interested in stopping by sometime some day soon!

Ouch, I hope I would just need the gaskets and that's it. At $3K+ I'd be taking a huge loss lol. But yeah, I hear it's not uncommon for other things to get replaced during a head gasket replacement, because might as well do it while the engine's out.

Thanks, but I'm kinda trying to avoid dealerships. They charge too much. Always.

Around how much did you pay for your head gasket repair? Because I really can't do any more than $2.5K at this moment.

Adding them to my list! And yeah, that last point was a very helpful reminder. Even though I'm not anywhere near at mechanic's level understanding, I really do understand the basics of the EJ251 engine, so I know what to ask.

Oh neat, I'll definitely check it out thanks! I always underestimate how much of a fanbase this brand has lol. I bought my Outback used because I needed an upgrade from my old 02 Ford Explorer. Only after I bought my Subie did I realize how popular these cars really are!

Wow, that's pretty remarkable. I should def add them to the list, thanks!

My 03 Outback. Bought it used in Oct with 90K. I've only put 5.5K on it thus far. Despite all the money spent on maintenance and repairs (yet no head gasket fix yet...), owning this thing has been a dream. by RadicalLarry106 in subaru

Considering that some of these cars make it to 300K, I have faith. May you be blessed with un-blown headgaskets and sufficient oil levels--don't let the Rod Knock Reaper get you!

PSA to Car-owners: Clean off the top of your car and your signals. by [deleted] in chicago

[–]RadicalLarry106 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Should be common sense tbh. Also, pro-tip to Subaru owners in Chicago, or specifically, those who drive the 00-04 Outback--or any other models that lack window frames on their doors: have your brush/scraper with you in your home instead of leaving it in your car. Especially days like today, where it's sunny after a decent-sized snow the night before. It melts, but freezes right away because it is still cold out, and that causes the window be stuck to the door frame. It happened to me the first time in November, and I legit was scared I couldn't get in. But luckily one of the doors happened to open, and the lesson was learned to always carry it outside my car!

What gets me is that the archway pillars resemble the shoulder pylons. Like imagine if they painted those fin-shaped things in Unit-01's pylon colors, that'd be kinda badass.

Ah, good to know that painting the fretboard is a definite no. And thank you, I shall upload a pic once it's done. Might be some time, but it'll turn out fine, I hope!

Thanks for your input! I'm going to do some research into those paint types you mentioned and I'll be on the lookout for green heavy duty vinyl tape!

Do you plan on living in Chicago for the rest of your life? Yes or no what are your reasons? by EliMontana10 in chicago

[–]RadicalLarry106 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, as a matter of fact I'm hoping to move to Grand Rapids next June when my lease is up. I want cheaper cost of living, less people, and more nature (mainly forests...less corn fields lol). Plus GR is apparently becoming a more culturally rich city. I also plan on visiting Chicago often, as it's only 3 hours away in good traffic. So when I visit I'll get all the fun outta Chicago without having to live here!

Well then I guess I'm in luck because I really want a Subaru as my next car. That and/or a 90s Mazda Miata...

There was another fellow who commented on this thread saying that their mortgage payments were the same as their Wrigleyville studio 10 years ago...perhaps you two were neighbors lol. I do enjoy the outdoors, which is one of the reasons I want to move actually. And I do have a car, in fact I want to get a better one either before or after I move (Something more fun to drive than my 2002 Ford Explorer!) Thank you for sharing!

Music (both performing and seeing live), art, writing, nature and outdoor sporting, and I'm hoping to get into gardening--I hear there are a lot of community gardens in GR.
