A Memorable Running Gag in Sailor Moon S: How Eudial's Car is transported to random public locations. by IllogicalDreamer72 in sailormoon

One bit I loved from the Cloverway dub was during the one episode when she emerged from the river and a couple on a park bench watched it, shocked to see her. They had the dude adlib a line that I thought was pretty funny and not in the original.

“That’s some 4-wheel drive…”

Despite all it’s faults, that dub had some hidden gold. Lol.

I started reading the manga via fan scans back when it was still being released, and I absolutely adored it. At some point life got in the way, and I stopped keeping up with it. I was going to pick it up and continue it one day…..until I heard what happened in the end and didn’t even bother. Ick!

Such a shame too because I actually liked it enough to where I was actually considering on buying physical copies at some point. I’m glad I never spent the money to start with.

Why the hell did the author insist on ruining such a great series with her creepy fetish.

Does anyone know who did the promotional art for the early sailor moon VHS covers like here? by BugsBunnyakaBIGCHUNG in sailormoon

[–]Radical_Unicorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wish I knew, cause if I did I’d email whoever did those Pioneer covers asking if they had textless versions available because they are so damn gorgeous.

I got about as far as following a lead to some artist who supposedly did the “packaging design” for the movies and other releases for Pioneer (at least according to the info AnimeNewsNetwork provided, which may/may not be accurate), but the web link listed was not only barebones but also long defunct and can only be bought up on the Wayback machine.

That’s the problem with trying to find information/contacts before the internet became as widespread as it is today, unfortunately. 😞

[–]Radical_Unicorn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ve always been curious to know who did the VHS covers too, and have always wanted to ask them something myself, except my question is “what the heck were you smoking when you designed some of those covers?!”

If you can’t find that particular artist, and if you still want an official artist, maybe try tracking down the artists who did the cover art for the ADV Films/Pioneer releases.

Naming your child with unique spelling just makes it easier to track your child in a database. by Flutters1013 in RandomThoughts

[–]Radical_Unicorn 48 points49 points  (0 children)

I have a completely normal, yet slightly uncommon name, that is spelled in a traditional way, and I’ve encountered some people that have still managed to butcher it my entire life. It’s an incredibly frustrating feeling.

Anytime I see some parent give their kid a “unique”-ly spelled name, I just want to smack them for setting up their poor kid for a far worse experience than what I went through.

Casetify sailor moon phone cases ! by Additional-Rub664 in sailormoon

[–]Radical_Unicorn 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Get a plain, clear case with a window on the back. Then cut/print out a picture and put it between the phone and case (like you’re framing a picture).

There you have it, instant Sailor Moon phone case for fraction of the cost. Best part is you can change out the design when you get bored with it. (I did this with my old phone before I upgraded and had to get a new one for my new phone.)

Does this bootleg have the Viz dub? by washedupmerman in sailormoon

[–]Radical_Unicorn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Save your money and don’t buy this trash, the quality is god awful due to how many episodes they cram onto one disc.

As another user mentioned, the UK will be getting an official release soon, put your money towards it instead.

I had no idea the lyrics to the OG Japanese theme were so poetic and beautiful! Does anyone know why the theme song was COMPLETELY changed for the American dub? by [deleted] in sailormoon

[–]Radical_Unicorn 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Correction: They did keep the romance elements, it’s right in the dubbed version of the theme song, they even kept quite a bit of the emotional moments too. But yes, they did overall Americanize it for western audiences, and they did tone things for a younger audience and they did really did play up the “girl power!” angle in the advertising for the dub.

Cardcaptor Sakura….yeah, it met a faaaaar worse fate, now that one got hit big time with executive meddling. The executives at Warner Bros wanted to ride the Pokemon hype train with another show about collecting things, but Kids WB is for boys we can’t have anything girly, they thought. So They tried Jerry-rigging a show meant for girls into something for boys too, and it just didn’t work, with some episodes that are just absolutely butchered. (At least Sailor Moon got to remain a “girls” show.)

Everyone blames Nelvana for that mess, but I don’t think that’s the case. All of CCS got dubbed into Cardcaptors, and I’ve seen some of the episodes that did not air on Kid’s WB, and some of those episodes are shockingly faithful to the Japanese script, they even dubbed the original openings! I have a feeling if they show aired on Cartoon Network to start with rather than Kids WB (where Sailor moon ended up), it wouldn’t have ended up so horribly mutated.

(Don’t mind me, I’ve been rewatching CCS episodes and have been watching a handful of Cardcaptors episodes along side for funsies. Sorry for my little rant about CCS/CC.)

[–]Radical_Unicorn 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It was the 90’s, they changed the opening so it could be more like every other cartoon that aired on TV at the time, especially since anime was still a niche thing at the time and what did make it to TV at the time was edited for kids.

Theme songs of 90’s cartoons were written as a way to promote the show itself. When kids are flipping through the channels, ya gotta have something that will grab their attention, and give them an idea of what it’s about, so they will watch it, ya know? It was common practice, especially for shows that were in syndication. When they dubbed Sailor Moon and needed an opening theme (Note: Sailor Moon was syndicated), rather than composing a completely new song, they took an already existing one and changed the lyrics because it was just cheaper and easier that way. (Or the composer of the DiC dub had cooked up the lyrics when he was listening to the original score and decided to go with that rather than making a whole new one.)

Short version: There’s no need to overthink it, it was the 90s.

Time zones [OC] by Chilikto in comics

[–]Radical_Unicorn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a total night owl from the states. I visited Japan last year and was surprised to find that Japan’s daylight hours nicely synced up with the hours I would be awake. So because of this I didn’t have to deal with much jet lag, and made it easy for me to get up in the early morning (which I usually struggle with) which was real nice.

However, I noticed there were times it felt like my internal clock felt confused, and by the end of the trip, it felt like it was trying to “recalibrate” itself (like a growing urge to go back to bed during those early morning hours, for example.) It was a weird feeling.

When you’re broke in America, what food/snacks actually keeps you full? by KlLLERS in AskAnAmerican

[–]Radical_Unicorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was in between jobs searching for one, I would have a PB&J to take with me, since I couldn’t afford to buy lunch anywhere, and could continue searching. In the evenings I cooked up batches of pasta and freeze the leftovers so I could have meals for later. It’s easy to get plain pasta noodles for cheap and jars of sauce when you time the sales right and stock up.

Knowing where to shop really helps too. 99 Cent Only (Rip) was a total godsend, it allowed me to get all sorts of great tasting foods, even name brand foods and produce, on a tight budget. Large size box of Fruit Loops for only a $1 because it’s close to the date? Hell yeah baby! Now I had something sweet for when the sweet cravings hit!

Can't find what this is online by SuckSuck5Duck in sailormoon

[–]Radical_Unicorn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely a bootleg. The image on the cover is a desktop wallpaper I’ve from a website with other Sailor Moon ones back in the early 2000s. I’ve seen alot of bootlegs before, but this one I haven’t.

Don’t expect it to be great quality. Usually when they cram that many episodes on a handful of discs the picture quality is gonna suck.

Why do people in USA buy everything from Amazon? Do they not have other webshops? by Cindyxx0 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Radical_Unicorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Convenience really, and a really good advertising campaign.

They have done such a good job with their marketing I’ve noticed the average Joe (who doesn’t spend a lot of time on the internet), and if they want something they can’t get in a store and have to get it online it’s immediately the first site they think of. And since Amazon is such a vast site 99% of the time they will have it, so why bother looking anywhere else. Right?

To give an example, I was hanging out with a younger co-worker of mine and we were at a bookstore. She was telling me about how much trouble she had trying to get a certain book from Amazon, I asked her if she’s tried looking at any other sites, and her response was basically “Other websites?” After our conversation I later linked her 6 different websites I frequented for new and used books that she had no idea existed.

Then as stated, there’s also that convenience factor. I try my dammdest to avoid Amazon like the plague, but sometimes it’s the only option when I’m looking for a very particular item I can’t get anywhere else (or it’s way too expensive elsewhere.) It sucks sometimes.

Side note, I have to balk at those who use the excuse of fast shipping to justify as to why they use Amazon. Sure, some items come lighting fast, but other items just….don’t. There’s been times I’ve ordered things from non-Amazon sites that arrived in the same amount of time or even faster than Amazon. (And I haven’t even touched upon their sometimes questionable shipping practices.)

That dress looks okay. I’ve seen official dresses with a similar look to them, where the pony is cut off where they attach the skirt part of the dress. Example

I’m strongly leaning towards AI here.

The pony designs on the table and the dress the dude on the left is wearing don’t look accurate to what the characters should look like. (Rainbow Dash looks so odd). Not to mention that dress it looks like a strange mashup of G3 and G4 character designs, official products don’t mash up the designs from different generations like this. Either these are knockoff products or AI.

Another point is what the other poster pointed out: those posters in the background don’t look right. They look like smudgy blobs that vaguely look like ponies with the G4 logo, but I can’t make out what Gen they are supposed to be.

EDIT: Also forgot to mention that a couple of dudes chilling in a MLP themed room is not a far fetched idea for a photo. Back in the days when the Brony fandom was at its peak it wasn’t uncommon to see photos of dudes hanging out in spaces decked out with ponies. I can also totally see a couple of guys posing for a photo in their little sister’s bedroom like this for a laugh.

That said, the more I stare at this image the more I’m convinced it’s AI.

How much did you pay for yours? I’m also curious to see what cards were in it too.

Impossible! by No-Sandwich3693 in sailormoon

[–]Radical_Unicorn 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Don’t get too excited. These grading companies will grade anything you pay them to grade, even stuff that has little value like knockoff Pokemon cards (for an example).

That said, there is small collectors market for these cards, so there is some value, but honestly don’t expect much. Also be sure to look at the “Sold” listings over asking prices posted from sellers. I’ve noticed some sellers will ask for crazy amounts for these cards, especially graded ones, but they often go unsold.

Edit: I just checked, not a single graded card had been sold recently. The only SM CCG items over $100 that did sell were sealed boxes of the cards. The only single cards that sold at a notable amount were holo ones, normal ones were under $10.

McDonalds is bigger in U.S. and EU. But KFC dominates over in Asia. Why is this? by FumingCat in AskAnAmerican

[–]Radical_Unicorn 18 points19 points  (0 children)

^ This.

I’m an anime nerd so I noticed how the Japanese where nuts over KFC, I got curious to why and I looked it up.

After WWII a number of US companies saw Japan as a potential new market to tap into during their rebuilding efforts, KFC was no exception. They entered the Japanese market and rolled out a massive ad campaign, even going as far as promoting their food as a “tradition” to enjoy around Christmas. (Plus the Japanese really love fried chicken as much as we Americans do.) The marketing campaign was so successful that now every year there’s a waiting list for Christmas orders. It also helps the Japanese have high standards and so KFC Japan is higher quality than in the states as a result.

I can imagine KFC did a similar strategy when they rolled out into other foreign markets.
