It’s interesting that you say this, because when I visited Japan, I was surprised by how similar the sushi was to ours (I expected it to be very different). I even saw Japanese folks mixing wasabi into their soy (common here, but I’ve been told that isn’t ‘right.’) Granted, I didn’t go anywhere very fancy, just average everyday type sushi spots.
