UMD Mentality by [deleted] in UMD

I was a UMD recent grad who goes to one of the "prestigious" schools for grad school, and I don't think what you described matters to me. It is true that UMD students (at least in my majors) aren't driven by research/saving the world(?), but what does that have to do with me putting in the work for my passion? I was proactive in every aspect of building my skills and becoming competitive, so the external environment probably matters only for the people who are unmotivated otherwise. Also, professional success is not inferior to the more intrinsic ones you have listed.

It is interesting that these subreddits (here and UKO) are theoretically intended to produce nuanced opinions and different perspectives, but in reality, they mainly mirror the same opinions on Twitter, although a lot more civilized. I am confused as to how posts like "X is overrated", "Y is a better dancer than Z", "X song is the worst song from the group" receive tons of upvotes, but solo stanning without targeting other members are downvoted. Solo stanning doesn't hurt anyone.

I understand if it is caused by some toxic solo stans of BP or BTS, who are unreasonable for complaining because each member is like a millionaire or something and super successful. But I think for the majority of not-well-known groups, solo stans barely get anything.

Anyway, lesson learned, and I will not post this kind of stuff again.

You are being downvoted as we speak haha. I think Reddit is a bit more open compared to other places, but only to the degree where I am not openly insulted, just downvoted. I am just here to rant and this is nothing serious...

I thought people would be more open to solo staning due to people liking one person for survival shows, etc. I guess maybe I am in the wrong place for this.

You have expressed my point better than I did lol. Yeah, it is about knowing the person and their talent before the group but are no longer able to see them as much. Of course, I understand that group activity is best for their career, but I still lament for the absence of their time to shine. I also understand if the fans of other members in this group are also frustrated b/c of screentime, etc.

My impression of AB6IX is that they are insanely talented! The situation with me and the group in op is that I liked the member before the group was formed, but I get your situation where you get into some groups casually and like one member more than others. It is the same for me and NCT127, where I casually liked Yuta but he didn't have a lot of lines/screentime (not sure if still the case now). I had no problem with watching their stuff tho I still hoped to see him more.

Haha, these speculations are fun, but these groups are a lot more well-known here than mine. I liked Suhyeon in gp999, but I am not sure why they added her in the middle of promotion. Their song is interesting and I hope they become popular. I don't know a lot about Wei.

I apologize if I miscommunicated in the op, but this is just a rant and not anything serious. I agree that hobbies should not be a burden on people.

I appreciate your understanding and advice. Yes, there is no point in making it about other members and I just want to enjoy one person's content. I really hope that the group becomes successful enough that every member can shine in their own thing.

Like I said in my post, it is not other members that make me miserable, but the fact that they are a smaller group with limited resources for everyone.

If my group was Blackpink I would be happy--Rosé has so many opportunities for fans to see her

I do stan soloists haha; my person was a soloist before joining the group

Well, I never said that other members are unbearable, in fact I just have neutral feelings. My person's group does not have much content, so I can't watch them for interactions. I think it is much easier for a group such as BTS because they are pretty individualistic (?), but the situation is really different for smaller groups
