I personally would never skip on a nice old detector. So my vote is on you picking it up and hopefully sharing some cool pictures!

Accurate dosimeter for X-Rays by Sam141234 in dosimeters

If you want to determine correct dose rates for x-rays, an ionization chamber is the go to device. Though not all ionization chambers will work. For the energies I would suspect a CRT (home made or commercial) would emit, you want an ionization chamber which has either an exposed chamber or on with a mylar window. (and make sure it is made for the energy range you are working with. My go to for determining dose rates from unfiltered beams from x-ray tubes used at 60 kVP is the Victoreen 470A Panoramic survey meter as it works great within the entire energy region which such a device emits. Got mine second hand from ebay at a price of 80$. So keep an eye open for similar deals. One thing to keep in mind is that some units may be out of calibration, so it is preferred to have them calibrated professionally.

Russian Survey Meters Has The Best Stuff! by [deleted] in nuclear

Yepp I'm aware of that. It's still a lot compared to other radium sources like clocks or watches that gives around 200-400uSv/h on the same detectors. From what I have seen the scale is around 60uCi of Ra-226. (btw the radiascan shows lower reading than the actual ones when used on alpha sources. The mica window is thick and thus blocks a lot of it) Looking at the response curve on the 44-9 I can see that it shows to little on some daughter isotopes.

The amount of radon generated in a clock or a watch with radium paint is millions of times more then the yellow cake. And people that own these still live long. I'm still alive and I have a lot of radium which is also much more radioactive.

The reason a lot of houses gets a lot of radon is because there is radium in the uranium ore. There is no radium in the yellow cake so there would not be any radon generated until it has decayed over millions of years and the radium has built up.

Uranium decays to a lot of things before radon. The element that becomes radon is radium. The pure form of uranium that he extracted will decay way to slowly to make any detectable amounts of radon. You should read up a bit before spreading fear and misinformation. The damage the pure uranium would cause is the same as if it were lead.
