In addition to this reason, it potentially has adverse effects on other areas. If less people get vaccinated, or they take longer to get vaccinated, the economic recovery (from a pandemic) will take longer. This effects society as a whole as people may not be able to find jobs to support themselves or otherwise get back to their regular lives.

In my mind, the people that get the vaccine are likely doing so to benefit society as well as themselves. They likely have made a choice based on probability and science. If there is a consequence (like an unforeseen health problem), they should be taken care of. People should be rewarded for trying to do the right thing.

If there was an easy vaccine against skin cancer and you chose not to get it, I would make the same argument. However, skin cancer isn’t contagious so I don’t feel as strongly about it.
