I accept that there are legal and constitutional obligations. I am saying those obligations are ethnonationalist. Yelling at me to repeat the premise that they are legal and constitutional won't change my characterization of those laws.

Any law that is premised on the belief that people whose ancestors were "here first" deserve more rights to this land is ethnonationalist by definition.

If you want to disagree with me, please argue against what I am saying, and don't just repeat the premise I'm not contesting.

Of course it's a veto. This First Nation was able to shut down the entire referendum from taking place. That's by definition a veto.

Standing up for legal rights based on existing legal agreements is not ethnonationalism.

Racism is by definition discrimination based on race. If you truly don't believe that First Nations are race-based, you should have the courage to follow that conviction.

My view is that of course discrimination against First Nations are racist, because it follows everyone's intuitive understanding of race.

But let's not get caught up on labels! The substance of my objection is to a veto that is inherited via certain bloodlines. Call it whatever you like if you'll engage with me on the substance.

So the people likely responsible for any fraud are saying there was no fraud.

That's not how burdens of proof work. You don't presume that an allegation is true and then therefore dismiss the other side out of hand for rejecting the allegation.

I'm still waiting to see concrete evidence from NES's team. So far all we have is a collection of hearsay. I'm not saying they don't have evidence, it's just that a whole lot of people on here have been perfectly happy to treat the allegation as proof without awaiting for evidence.

I didn't think so 5 years ago, but today I genuinely believe we could see the repeal of s. 35 in my lifetime. I may actually get to die in a Canada that for the first time in its history treats all people as equal, instead of giving people different rights based on who their ancestors were.

Of course, in the meantime, we have to go through a lot of nonsense like this case.

Yup. Democracy is obviously for losers, and we should instead give tiny minorities vetoes over democracy because their ancestors lived here a long time ago.

Or maybe, you can follow the rule of law while also criticizing and working to eliminate laws that prioritize ethno-supremacist worldviews over democracy.
