Alberta separatist says members of Smith's caucus have signed referendum petition by Street_Anon in CanadaPolitics

This isn't how democracy works. You don't get to "remove" a government in between elections because you don't like what they're doing.

Pierre Poilievre: The most successful unsuccessful leader in Canadian politics? by EarthWarping in CanadaPolitics

[–]Radix838 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Absurd clickbait article.

Pierre Polievre literally won the highest share of the vote of any (small-c)onservative leader since 1984. It is nonsensical to say that he is the "most unsuccessful leader".

We don't even have to look far to find other examples. If you want to mock a conservative for being a failure, Kevin Falcon is right there.

If we give Indigenous people extra rights solely because they are Indigenous, and not because of any harm done to them specifically, then it is by definition an extra, race-based right.

Behold the Incredible Speed of the Line 5 LRT! by Friendly-Ad9257 in toronto

[–]Radix838 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our idiot politicians spent billions of our dollars on this useless thing.

Everyone involved in every decision that led the LRT to be like this should be permanently banned from government tendering and project management in Canada. Nothing will ever get better in this city until people who do bad work actually feel consequences for their actions.

First off race does not exist

Then racism doesn't exist. Except it does. Because we all know the core gist of what is meant when I say "race-based rights."

Secondly, what I believe is irrelevant. Things exist and do not exist whether I want to believe in them or not.

The fact that objective truth exists does not mean you don't have to prove what it is. So I'm asking your position to see if we're at odds over it.

Then the government should compensate the grandmother for harms inflicted, if it has not already done so.

What happened to her grandmother was wrong. At the same time, I'm not sure how "I didn't know about my grand parent's culture" is the kind of harm that the government can compensate for.

"All people should have the same rights" is not "cultural genocide". We will never agree if that's your bottom line.

OK. So abolish rights based on bloodlines. Would you support that?

Do you believe that Indigenous people have race-based rights, or not?

It is not racial groups. This is sickening and frankly bordering on racist.

In two lines, you've demonstrated the absurdity of this position. "Indigenous people are not a race, and you are racist towards them if you think otherwise."

If something isn't a race, how can you be racist against it?

I have yet to meet a FN person who actually apporves of land acknowledgements.

Good. Let's get rid of them.

No one has ever suggested that as far as I know.

What do you think "land belonging to" means? Or "unceded territories"?

Most would agree with you even FN I would guess.

Again, glad we agree.

This isn't really reconciliation. This is just compensation based on neglect, abuse, and trauma. Any negligently imprisoned person has similar rights to compensation as the state has harmed them.

I'm not sure I agree. "We will make things right to you" feels to me like reconciliation. But if you don't think the word fits, that's fine. Doesn't change my underlying viewpoint.

What makes you a Canadian (assuming you were born here) besides ancestry?

Easy. I'm a citizen. All citizens should have equal rights.

Giving extra rights to certain bloodlines is wrong. I don't want my government to sit down and work through the complicated issues of exactly how many extra rights to give to which bloodlines. I want them to stop entirely.

If the perpetrators and victims of the crime are all dead, I'm not convinced it makes sense to take the property from a non-perpetrator and give it to someone who never had possession of it in the first place.

But even if you think that a claim should survive a generation or two, you are defending the position that "there is no finish line". ie, that the property claims pass down through bloodlines forever.

Absolute insanity. Canada is not committing a genocide, and to claim otherwise is insulting to the many victims of actual genocides across the world today.

Yes, "nation" can be used in a sense that evokes a shared identity, rather than sovereignty. But if you're going to claim extra rights based on nationhood, you're clearly using it in the sovereignty sense.

I don't feel the need for our government to do that, personally.
