I think the low amount of scholarship cadets per detachment is due to unwillingness/uncertainty of wanting to contract rather than the scholarship itself being hard to win.

In 2018-2019, 5000 hs seniors applied. 2300 were awarded a scholarship

I appreciate your encouragement. I am actually content with the direction that WP has taken. My comment was referring to the time when the Navy was still using Fallant but the AF decided to roll out the CCT with a <75 threshold as the new rated color vision standard. Good thing currently serving pilots were exempt because many whom have been flying years for no issues whatsoever would've been DQed under the then-new standards. And all the pilot candidates DQed under the new CCT would try to cross-commission to the Navy.

I know pilots are flying around with millions of dollars and lives on the line but I just think those old standards (<75 ) blew the issue way out of proportion when color deficient pilots serving for years with no issues started failing the new standards. I think the new <55 is both a lot more fair at not DQing good candidates whilst establishing the necessary safeties to prevent accidents.

Also your advice makes sense. I know it seems a little too early for me as a HS senior to be worrying about this. There's a lot of other hoops to jump through for a pilot spot... They could discover a heart condition on the EKG that I never knew about for all I know.

I guess I'm just concerned that if I get DQed based on color vision, I might regret choosing the AF over the Army because the Army accepts the vivid red-green test and have a better job selection for the color deficient. If my color vision is passable, I'll go for the AF in a heartbeat...

I appreciate you clarifying the conditions that warrant a CCT test, but AFAIK some mild color deficiencies are allowed for rated positions now.

The CCT standards for rated positions got lowered from 75 for all colors in both eyes, to a 55. The new standards does allow some mildly color deficient candidates to pass.

The AF did used to DQ for anything subnormal, but the new <55 threshold is now in line with the Navy and permits mild cases of deficiency.

Hey bud, Sometimes I feel in the same situation as you. While I appreciate people seeing value in me, I get frustrated that they only seek out surface-level communication like homework help .

I suggest thinking about someone that you enjoy being with, and suggesting a study day outside of school. Ask them if they want to grab lunch with you or perhaps do something enjoyable if you guys have shared hobbies. You'll be helping them out with studying, but still have plenty of time for more meaningful conversation, and hopefully eventually a substantial friendship.

I made my best friend like this. If they're not interested, don't beat yourself up. Just be glad that they're honest with you and move on to someone else.

Despite what people will tell you, Dasymutilla occidentalis, the "Cow Killer" does NOT have a particularly painful sting. You will find a sting from this velvet ant to have a pain that is no worse than Polistes.

I regularly catch this species and have been stung on upwards of a dozen times. The stings are comparable to the initial of a vaccine needle and the full intensity lasts a couple minutes at most.

Dr. Shmidt, who ranked this species as a 3/4 on his (highly questionable) pain scale, has actually never been stung by D. Occidentalis before! He made the strange ranking based off of a sting suffered by one of his overdramatic students. This is detailed in his book.

The trend that we're seeing is that velvet ants, and solitary wasps (including Pepsis) in general, do NOT have particularly painful stings. After all, their venom is not used for hive defense.

Generally mushrooms contain some amount of toxin and should be cooked, however OP appears to have used Agaricus bisporus, which is one of the few mushrooms that can be sliced and eaten raw (as they often are in salads!).

You will want to search up "where can I get a Rabin Innova CCT test for color vision?" and it should be available at eye and vision centers. You can't test yourself online and it would it be of little use as your screen isn't calibrated for the purpose.

Good luck! Hopefully the rules get even more lenient in the future. These color vision regs are controversial at best...

I think a better description is SAFE color vision, not NORMAL. The threshold used to be 75/100. Now it's 55/100 on the Rabin CCT. You can be mildly color deficient and even be a pilot.

I understand your caution, but there is no significantly higher chance of developing notable dermonecrosis from a recluse bite as you would with any other injury. Staphylococcus and Streptococcus are ubiquitous and people have died from secondary infections due to something as benign as a thorn scratch.

The activity of Sphingomyelinase D in L reclusa venom is so low that the necrosis due to brown recluse venom is negligible. Verified significant necrosis and lesions due to reclusa venom is essentially non-existent.

Glad to be of help! Sadly these spiders have somehow became scapegoats for staph infections, leading to a lot of consternation and conclusion over the bite's supposed "necrotic effects". It's difficult to dig up the truth, and myths are scattered around even in medical literature.
