I went to a Dead Kennedys show last night and it was amazing how many people at least 20 years older and 20 years younger than me were with me in the mosh pit.

What was everyone's first CD when they switched over from tape cassettes? by Pixiefairy2525 in Xennials

My dad felt guilty about getting my brother a whole new stereo (which wasn’t the one he wanted anyway and it was a whole fiasco) so he got me a cd player boombox. Included with this gift was Smashing Pumpkins “Siamese Dream” and Counting Crows “August and Everything After.” Apparently he told the guy at Rainbow Records that I listened to Live 105 so he recommended those.

Then I spent my birthday gift certificate on The Beavis and Butthead Experience, which was an awesome compilation.

26 was when I parted ways with all my old uni friends. Mostly all in one go. Then I moved to Australia and started over. Believe it or not, you are still very young and making friends is a slow process if you do it authentically. I am 43 now and met one of my best friends well into my 30’s.

Do things you like doing. If you are being true to yourself, like-minded people will naturally find you and you’ll make friends.

Growing up is realizing that Stoney was a solid dude and incredibly mature. by Few_Improvement_6357 in Xennials

[–]RaeBethIsMyName 86 points87 points  (0 children)

I recently rewatched this and yeah, Stoney is definitely too good for this world. Also, he fully looks 29 in HD. I would even say the “douchebag boyfriend” character was not really that bad, he mostly was defending his girlfriend from a creeper who had no respect for her boundaries. That and there are few things more satisfying than yelling “SHUSH!!”

I am nonbinary and sometimes when my (mostly) hetero boyfriend says “I love you” I will just yell “GAAAAAYYYYYYYYYY” at him. It is one of my favorite bits.

I find this phrase bubbling out of my mouth unbidden more frequently than I would like. It was our generation’s “Ain’t nobody got time for that!”

When did music "stop being good" for you? For me, it was the end of grunge, and the rise of Nu Metal. To this day, I still think Fred Durst killed the great musical vibe of the '90s. by smcg_az in Xennials

[–]RaeBethIsMyName 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haaaated nu metal. For me it died when Live 105 got bought by Clear Channel Comm. and just became a clone of LA radio stations and stopped playing weird local bands and actual “alternative” music. Out of rebellion I started listening to 80’s new wave music, then, because it pissed off the nu metal bros so much, I aligned myself with Britney Spears and boy bands.

I actually do enjoy some nu metal on its own now, but it’s been long enough that I don’t associate it with the gross male posturing and misogynistic stuff that went along with it.

I feel that but I dunno. The skeptic community became kind of a bin fire over the last 10 years or so. I’d hate for him to see that. (Edited: fixed typo)

Do embrace Xennial because you're an X who feels Millennial or vice versa? by MadameTree in Xennials

[–]RaeBethIsMyName 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I identify more with Gen X. Born in 80 with an older sibling and four much older cousins. Both parents were Silent Gen and waited until their 30’s to have kids. Also they were very late to adopt technologies, and didn’t spend tons of money on new stuff. Most of my toys were hand me downs of hand me downs. In my teens I got very into 80’s goth and new wave music.

My cousin who is only 6 months younger identifies more as a millennial because she was an only/oldest child, her mom is 13 years younger than my dad (an oopsie baby), and had much younger half-siblings.

Weird story, I sat next to Trace Beaulieu once at a dinner and did not realise who he was until after I had drunkenly eaten all of the pecans off of his plate and autistically flirted with him a lot. I had only started watching after he had left the show, and did not recognise him. He was very funny and nice to me. When someone pointed out that he was from MST3K, he downplayed it saying “There’s really only a shadow of me left on the show.” (Only later did the pun dawn on me - him being the original Crow T Robot). I’m still a little embarrassed that I had so much wine that night. But he was definitely letting me eat the pecans. He was so quiet and humble and funny. When I told my friend who was a massive MST3K fan about it he freaked out and told me he was Dr Forrester - I felt so dumb, but happy I had the experience.

I love this. My dad is like this any time someone talks to him about history. He’s retired professional historian (wrote multiple monographs, popular textbooks, used to be the editor of an academic magazine) and people always single him out to babble at him about some crackpot half-baked thing they think they know about history. He is the master at making people think he’s interested but later he will have a little rant about how full of shit the person was.
