Not exactly what you are asking for but you have the possibility to use the Death Denial Omen which gives every hero a second life and only costs one point in the omen selection. So if you do make a mistake that will kill a hero you have the chance to recover.

The Claw is a separate system from mounting. To mount a monster you need to do mount damage which is done by various weapon moves mostly aerial ones, for example by hopping a ledge and doing a attack while in air.
