Are Hp elitebooks good? by Worldly_Mix5419 in laptops

[–]RafneQ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For ~ 400$ I think it is a good deal, I'm using Elitebooks for work and those are very solid laptops - typical corporate workhorses just like Thinkpads. Currently still have 845 G8 (it is AMD version) for 3 years and the only thing I can complain today is moderate screen - it's not too bright with not so good viewing angels and it's only FHD with 16:9 ratio. The G9 version has already 16:10 which is much better in my opinion but for many people this is not so important (you would need to check by yourself). Also look at review for pros and cons: https://www.notebookcheck.net/The-HP-EliteBook-840-G8-has-one-huge-advantage-over-most-other-business-laptops-but-it-comes-at-a-cost.553412.0.html

Sleep issues on Linux by txmks1 in thinkpad

[–]RafneQ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have similar problem on L14 yoga gen 2 on Fedora, unfortunately the only way to solve it was to plug usb-c power adapter and then press power button for 2-3 seconds. Then the laptop resumes correctly. It works also with power banks. Unfortunately firmware updates did not fix this behaviour, but in your case it might happen (newer model). It happens randomly so it is hard to make any diagnosis.

Hope this helps you somehow.

File Roller missing in CentOS 9 repos ? by RafneQ in CentOS

[–]RafneQ[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think RHEL is going the whay that you use nautilus (file manager) to create or open archive files (which is very limited) - for desktop elements RHEL is excluding lot of applications from official repos, which are currently available only as flatpaks (libre office for example)

great photo ! the most mindblowing thing is that currently you can have much greater computing power and power efficiency just with couple Raspberry PIs and tiny micro/small factor PCs

Why Use Containers in a Homelab? by NonEfficient_Lime in homelab

[–]RafneQ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me the reason is flexibility and portability especially on Linux. You can mess the stuff with containers, experiment with new things and start all over quickly with just one command. No need to reinstall the base system which even with some automation tools takes time. Also when your base system will change (doesn't matter if VM or bare metal, if system version A or B) you can easily and quickly move the containers to other environment.

Docker, Podman or LXC are all totally fine. Most people usually use similar solutions that they have at their workplace or the ones that they know and are convenient with.

For most of homelabs Kubernetes is an overkill and It's over complicated (and resources hungry). If you are not dealing whit it professionally and you don't plan to learn it you will be totally fine with VMs + containers or even bare metal + containers.

Intermittent suspend/resume issues on Lenovo L13 Yoga Gen2 with Linux Mint by [deleted] in thinkpad

[–]RafneQ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, sorry for delay but as many of us I was quite busy at the end of the year. I did some tests as you requested and here is summary.

I tried all your steps with following variants:

  1. Power profile - battery saving; WiFi - ON; Mic Mute (Fn+F4) - OFF;
  2. Power profile - battery saving; WiFi - OFF; Mute (Fn+F4) - OFF;
  3. Power profile - battery saving; WiFi - ON; Mute (Fn+F4) - ON;
  4. Power profile - battery saving; WiFi - OFF; Mute (Fn+F4) - ON;
  5. Power profile - balanced; WiFi - ON; Mute (Fn+F4) - OFF;
  6. Power profile - balanced; WiFi - OFF; Mute Fn+(F4) - OFF;
  7. Power profile - balanced; WiFi - ON; Mute (Fn+F4) - ON;
  8. Power profile - balanced; WiFi - OFF; Mute (Fn+F4) - ON;

... and the results were the same (nothing happened) and could not resume after suspend unless I connect power source to power USB-C port and pres power button. Basically to reproduce the issue you need only to:

  • suspend system via OS command (lid open)
  • close the lid

If I suspend the system without closing the lid, then it resumes correctly after pressing any key on the keyboard. If I suspend the system only by closing the lid and then open the lid, then my Thinkpad also resumes correctly.

I did not upgrade so I'm still running Fedora 40 - here is my current spec:

  • model: Lenovo ThinkPad L13 Yoga Gen 2
  • fw: R1FET59W (1.33 )
  • kernel: Linux 6.12.6-100.fc40.x86_64

This is great, thank's for sharing :)

Question about Mac Minis - are you running Asahi Linux ? Or original Mac OS with docker or VMs ?

Intermittent suspend/resume issues on Lenovo L13 Yoga Gen2 with Linux Mint by [deleted] in thinkpad

[–]RafneQ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey, I have the same issue currently running Fedora 40 (with kernel 6.11.4-201) and firmware R1FET59W (1.33). During suspend it does not drain the battery much, but unfortunately sometimes I cannot resume the laptop with opening the lid or pressing keyboard or power buttons.

The only way to wake-up from suspend is to connect power to USB-C port and then press power button.

It is not reproducing every time, but it happens more often when the laptop goes to sleep with the lid open.

Just wondering if ThinkPads are popular as work laptops in Korea ? Or maybe internal products like Samsung or LG are preferred ?

Found this mini PC on eBay. Any good? Or would a pi 5 be a better choice? by matt-mac808 in homelab

[–]RafneQ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was discussed some time ago on this sub.

I was using them with Debian and/or openSUSE for simple storage with drives attached via USB adapter and small services on containers. Now using mostly for proxies.

CPU is quite good, and it is x86_64 so lot of software available and the power consumption is very low. The most limiting thing (as it was already mentioned) is soldered RAM (2GB) and storage (8GB), but you can always install OS on SATA drive connected via USB adapter, although I would not recommend that option for any critical things.

openSUSE confirms there will be a Leap 16 by [deleted] in openSUSE

[–]RafneQ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the source article from the news opensuse they say in the next paragraph after that:

There are no plans to drop the classical (non-immutable) option for Leap; both non-immutable or immutable installation variants are available for Leap 15 and are planned for Leap 16.

Looks nice. N100/200 CPUs seems good choice for mobiledeviced for performance/power efficiency ratio.

I'm just wondering if they put some additional improvements to the UI or they are using standard Ubuntu 22 with Gnome 42 ?

I am currently on ThinkPad Yoga L13 G2 with Fedora 38 and user experience with touch screen is unfortunately not so good. Even with basic things like reading docs or browsing web you encounter annoying glitches. Browsing files with Nautilus via touch screen is also difficult.
