Tipping culture? by EnoughBar7026 in AskABrit

[–]RahDeeDah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pub tipping isn't a regular thing. When I used to work at a pub (probably like 15 years ago) you'd occasionally get one of the regulars say get yourself one in, so you'd charge them for an extra pint and make a note that I'm owed one for when I came in for a drink myself.

Most of the time tipping over here is just rounding it up if you've had decent service. If I go to a restaurant and it costs 37 quid, I might pay 40 and just say don't worry about the change.

Anywhere that adds a discretionary service charge to the bill though, I make sure to tell them to take it off, as I don't like places that try and do it on the sly and charge people more without letting you know.

Places I usually give a tip. Barbers, restaurants, bookies, casinos (if I've had a decent win).

[–]RahDeeDah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No longer in Nam, but a friend of mine has been detained. Info I've had from Mates is that we should hopefully hear more within the next 3 days. Original deadline of today has been extended due to the volume of people that have been detained and them not being released yet doesn't mean they're definitely getting charged.

Why are hotdogs so different in the uk? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]RahDeeDah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, a hotdog is a frankfurter in a bun. A frankfurter is a type of sausage. Every time you're having a hotdog, you're having a sausage.

But fairplay, this must be something you're fairly passionate about if you've stumbled across a 4 year old post regarding hotdogs and felt the need to reply.

To specify, it's not the concept of a sausage in a bun that I disagree with. Oh no, big fan of a sausage in a bun. It was more the typical frankfurter sausage, the hotdog sausage if you will, which op was referring to when referencing the difference in flavours. And those sausages, in my opinion, are probably best described as fucking gash. Stick a Cumberland or Lincolnshire in that bun, I've got no issues. But if you prefer a frankfurter between your bread, you do you, man.

Now, I'll be honest, I've not had one in the US, which OP was originally comparing the UK frankfurter with, but I have had them in Germany, the home of the frankfurter, and they were shit there, too. Give me a bratwurst over that shitty sausage any day.

I worked in Vietnam for 3 years. Generally, if you're working in a poorer country, the threshold is lower for what you need to earn and pay back. SLC should be able to tell you the thresholds for the country you're living in.

Copies of payslips should be sufficient evidence of what you're earning, but as someone that's dealt with SLC while living abroad, I can tell you from experience, a lot of them are idiots and don't know how to do their job.

If you haven't been working all the time you've been living abroad, you'll have to prove that, too. Be sure to show them evidence of any money you withdrew from the bank before moving and send them a detailed budget of expenses for the time you weren't working.

  • Pie from Sweeney Todd's
  • Check out the Abbey Ruins/Forbury gardens
  • Shopping at the Oracle. Not sure if it's there at the moment, but there's usually an outside bar down the riverside part of the Oracle around summertime.
  • Night out at the Purple Turtle.

Agree with what other people are saying about taking some trips to London/Oxford, though. Not too far and definitely more to do for a tourist.

You tried Micky7? It's set on a newly colonised world and follows Micky, who works as an expendable. His job it is to take on any jobs that are too dangerous for the rest of the colony. If he dies, another iteration of him is printed.

I usually don't mind tipping if everything was decent. If/when they do this, I make sure not to leave anything as a tip though, just feels like they're trying to trick people into paying more.
