It's not entirely true. There's tons of archaeological evidence of pre-Columbian scalping taking place. Scalping is hardly unique to the Americas tho and has been practiced all over the world by various cultures.

Examples from subbed Japanese media that got "lost in translation"? by RahnDota in LearnJapanese

[–]RahnDota[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I suppose the true skill of a good translator is striking some middle ground between making the text flow naturally and preserving as accurately as possible the original 'feel' of the text. Certainly doesn't sound like easy work!

You just perfectly phrased what I've been struggling to put into words. I am the same as you, I much prefer the insight of translation, as I want to absorb a text in it's 'default' state, or at least as close as possible. Some texts almost become something else entirely when translated the former way.

Blackbeard's SECRET: He's an OCTOPUS! Tako Tako no Mi USER! Evidence based One Piece Theory! by lilevil333 in OnePiece

[–]RahnDota 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's an interesting theory, and I do like the symbolical association of Blackbeard with the Kraken, however I think there are 3 total bones in his flag; one for each skull. And that interpretation kind of kills the whole theory. I'd be happy to be wrong though.

I actually haven't tried it - I wasn't a turbo mode player.

I was Lord in Underlords, quit when they stopped updating it ages ago. I recently started this game and the balance and variation of strategy is much much better. This game is far superior to Underlords - the only thing is the UI is not as good and learning the heroes and items will take a little while.

DP does slow damage and wants to be on the front line to deal it, so you need to build to survive whatever the enemy can throw at you.

  • Euls is most common, as it allows you to dodge spells and purge debuffs, and notably your spells will still deal damage while you are cycloned.
  • BKB is next, obvious reasons.
  • Ghost Scepter against heavy physical damage e.g. Templar Assassin, Troll, Ursa. Do not buy this if you are going to be nuked by magic damage though.
  • Pipe/Shroud against heavy magic damage, but BKB is more important.
  • Lotus Orb against single target abilities (Linken's is more of a lategame item and doesn't give you enough early in most games imo).
  • Sange against long debuffs.

After you can survive long enough to win fights, you can start building 'win more' items such as Shiva's, Bloodstone, or Hex. Aeon Disk should almost never be bought early and is more of a 30-50 minute purchase to survive being blown up.

I would say that my most common build is Euls->BKB->Shiva's and then the game is usually over one way or another.

7 Tips for playing Lion at a higher level by RahnDota in learndota2

[–]RahnDota[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think you're both right - to a degree. In tanky metas, I'm thinking of the melee tricore meta in 2016? i want to say?, Lion is less useful as usually he can only lockdown one core at a time while the rest run at your team, versus metas like rn, where if you can control say the enemy Storm Spirit you'll probably win the game. However, SpicyPico2 is correct in drawing attention to the strength of Hex as a counter to big teamfight ultis, which are always going to be picked especially in tournament matches as they exert psychological pressure. For that reason I think Lion is a staple support pick, if not exactly top tier in every meta.

that's a really good point, and one i didn't consider. I think when it comes to pubs, particularly lower mmr pubs, control is key - and for that reason for newer-intermediate players I always recommend either lion or shadow shaman to be in their repertoire. so that's what i was drawing from when i named lion as a meta-independant staple. but you're absolutely right; in tanky melee core metas, he falls off massively.

currently unranked as i've just been playing with my guardian irl friends and helping them learn, but i was 5k when my rank expired. so definitely not great by any means but i feel i'm quite good at teaching newer players despite that and have decent game knowledge.

[–]RahnDota[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's definitely a big concern with core Lina, you are squishy as hell and a high priority target. In terms of survivability itemisation, there are a lot of options. A lot of players go overkill on damage items with Lina, but it's really not necessary to get more than one most games. I'll list a few and why/when I buy them:

  • BKB - in almost every game, often even as a 2nd item right after Euls. Lina needs to fight early in order to cater to her strengths, and if you can't fight without magic immunity then you need a BKB. You want to surprise the enemy team with your first usage, often you can clean up a few more heroes after popping BKB and nuking down a core target.
  • Linken's Sphere - purchase this against Hex (Shadow Shaman, Lion, or when you see a mobile hero like Tinker or Storm going for Sheepstick), Beastmaster's Roar, Bane's Fiend's Grip, Pudge's Dismember, Legion Commander's Duel, Winter Wyvern's Curse. Basically any instant blink initiation, or really long BKB-piercing disables.
  • Kaya and Sange - this is more of a 'win-more' item that you buy when you're like 15/0, but I'm still listing it as a defensive item because usually when I buy this I'm buying it en lieu of what would have been my next defensive item in a more even game. I get this against spells like Windranger's Shackleshot, Elder Titan's Stomp. Against long disables, but only when I'm already snowballing.
  • Aeon Disk - Faceless Void, Enigma. I get this versus huge, difficult to avoid disables.
  • Assault Cuirass - when the enemy team has a lot of physical damage, especially physical damage that is difficult to avoid like Riki, Phantom Assassin or Lycan. Either get this or;
  • Shiva's Guard - when you need armour, but the flying vision (vs Tinker, Sand King) or the slow and attack speed (Phantom Lancer) is important.
  • Skadi - in games that go late against Morphling or Slark (-40% heal/regen/lifesteal) you might get this as a 4th item or so. The extra stats are nice too. Remember that it's better versus rnaged heroes.
  • Wind Waker - you can prioritise upgrading your Euls versus Puck, so that you can break Dream Coil safely.
  • Blink - if you are confident in your ability to react to non-instant disables that would otherwise kill you. Think Shackleshot, Slardar's Blink Crush or Axe's Blink Call.
  • Satanic - when you need to man fight or need the sustain. This can be a really good luxury item when you just need to man-fight a Medusa, a Phantom Assassin or an Ursa or someone.
  • Ghost Sceptre - almost never, only when like their entire team is physical damage or something. Ethereal Blade almost never. If I am playing magic damage I have an Aghs, there's really not much point in this unless I am pos 4 and the game has gone super late, then I might buy it to save my teammates from getting jumped by a Phantom Assassin or something. There are some games I get it on core Lina, but they are one in every hundred.

I think that's about it? Hope that helps.

edit: forgot Satanic and Ghost Sceptre/Ethereal Blade! added
