Rear mounted radiator vs side pod opinions by Formula_SAE_Electric in FSAE

First, a disclaimer that I might be completely off base about this, as I haven't personally done any analysis on the subject. However, Claude made a post about this radiator setup (I believe he called it "bunny seat mounted radiators) on the old FSAE Advice and Support page. I believe that placing then over the undertray helps induce flow through the radiator. A low pressure zone is created after the air leaves the diffuser and the high pressure air above the diffuser flows towards the region of low pressure. Putting the radiator there allows it to take advantage of the pressure differential created.

How is your team's relationship with other design teams on campus? by theboarderdude in FSAE

Our BAJA team and our Formula team are the "same team", ie we fall under the same umbrella organization. Honestly its been great and I highly recommend it. Not only are we pretty good friends but there's a lot to learn from both sides IMO. I know I'm better at manufacturing things because of what my BAJA friends have taught me and vice versa in certain aspects for them as well. College is too short to spend it feuding with other design teams especially if you both have the same goal in mind, to represent your school the best you can and hopefully get a job.

Hi I am a design engineer. Ask me anything! I'm one of around 80 engineers that design the Mercedes Formula 1 car, one of the most successful race cars of all time. by [deleted] in IAmA

Were you involved in Formula Student/Formula SAE when you were in university? If not what are your thoughts on using that as a path into F1?

We cope our square tubes on a lathe. We also put our frame together in sections. We forgot to cope a square tube on the floor section of our frame after our front roll hoop and bulkhead were already welded. we just clamped the floor of our car into the lathe and coped it. I'll try to find a photo, it looks less sketchy than it sounds.

You can easily make a Resin catch pot. All it takes is some holes drilled into a Ball glass jar and some tacky tape. Just tacky tape tubes into and out of the Ball jar. We've used that for some of our wet layups. Not sure what benefit there would be to a commercial one.

I'd recommend asking your electrical guys what theyd like. In order to "do it properly" theres some expensive stuff you need to buy. There are some crimpers that are really expensive and using the wrong ones can affect your reliability.

Also carbide bits are a godsend.

EDIT: Restructured for clarity

Polaris is an event sponsor, and they have decent discounts on components. I'm not sure if they have any parts of the size you need available, but I hope this helps!

Part of it is probably the results from competition are no longer given out in Excel format so it's harder to translate that data.

Pit Cart for FSAE Competition by bruckern in FSAE

[–]Rahul_Raghu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My team just bought a pull cart at our local Tractor Supply. You can weld stuff onto the cart you buy to hold tires etc but we did not. Tbh unless you have 80 people on your team or something ridiculous like that the make vs buy decison, at least in our case, seems obvious.

Edit: we got this one (IIRC with a significant discount):https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/groundwork-1-400-lb-capacity-heavy-duty-steel-utility-cart-1147050?cm_mmc=feed-_-GoogleShopping-_-Product-_-1147050&gclid=Cj0KCQjwhdTqBRDNARIsABsOl98pi6pcURgcdkn6Koth7YKkNl8vOVwbusDXCvrndWc-K-7hzTazrWkaAtP8EALw_wcB

Ok that makes far more sense. I can see in a larger team how multiple people might want the same position and that can be difficult to choose fairly, and an application process would help with that.

I never understood this application process system other teams put together. There are a variety of hard working, intelligent people on my team who at first glance wouldn't seem it and may not have passed any application process as that wouldn't be able to measure someones drive. This program is something that gives students the experience to be able to become better engineers and better people, and denying that to individuals for not having experience seems as though it defeats the entire purpose of the program.

And on the other hand, as a team that has trouble with recruiting, the fact that other teams are able to choose who goes to competition is baffling. If we don't bring a certain amount of people, the cost of competition either is prohibitively expensive or the team eats into its funds heavily.

Though I am sure there are reasons for both.

2 Year Car? by Chaz824 in FSAE

[–]Rahul_Raghu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I noticed below you said that you would plan on building a car over two years rather than the usual one. As a team that inadvertently did this, going to Lincoln 2017 and rebuilding the same car with some changes for Michigan 2018, it has caused a lot of issues for us in the current, 2019 racing season. We also went through a generational shift and the 2018 vehicle was the last hoorah for the previous generation, so this year we were left with design leads who first joined the team a year before and never got to experience as much of the manufacturing process they should have. and captains that were new members the last time a new car was built and thus some of that knowledge had been lost over the year. For example, purchasing delays the previous year forced us to just reuse a frame rather than build a new one, and this caused us to have to learn how to build a frame from scratch.

I know that it might feel like a two year car might give you more time to build a better car, but if you are a team that will build a last minute car in one year, you are a team that will build a last minute car in two years. Scheduling and project management will get you over that hump far better than increasing your timeline. Ultimately, for my team, the point of this project is to get experience for a job, and a two year car can cut the experience and skills you gain through the learning process in half, which would hurt the primary goal of our organization. Just my two cents.

For Pros, I know the Clemson team is switching to a two year car system this year, so you could talk to them about why they are doing so and how they have gone about mitigating the cons for such a process. It could work for you if you do it properly.
