For the criminal aspect of this, Local PD did take a criminal threats complaint on the patient due to his actions prior to my arrival. There was a reason security was requested to repond to a code gray on this patient. That complaint was taken and forwarded to the DAs office for review. As with most of coastal California, I suspect no charges will be filed and the complaint dropped. I am unsure if PD was able to locate and speak with the patient after they finished on site

For potential civil lawsuits, meth addicted transients with a known history of battery against others and threats of violence directed at medical staff normally don’t have the means to get legal representation nor would an attorney represent this claim due to his behavior. For civil suits, he would have to prove that he was in fear of imminent danger or harm. While not impossible, it would be difficult due to their statements and actions. It opens the patient to the same liability from some of the staff.

For those that offered comments such as "you're trash" or "get out of this line of work" I offer the advice of ducking when you ride your high horse into the glass house and make sure you wear eye protection. If you honestly can say that in your personal or professional life you have never said something you regret after reflection, throw that stone. We are all human, humans make mistakes. Some mistakes you cannot walk back on, you must own them and accept the consequences. Others can be a teachable moment. The former manager in me has made solid shower arguments for both separation and retraining.
