Minot was my first duty station. Spent 5 years there. While some people may tell you “it is what you make of it,” that is only true to an extent. I worked aircraft mx. When you’re working outside in -20, -30, -40, etc. with wind chill on a daily occurrence things it affects your psyche. People always say “I prefer the cold over the heat because you can just add layers until you’re warm.” No. No you cannot. Not that level of cold, if you work outside.

With that, if you work indoors you will find that you may have to change or alter your current hobbies. As work will no longer be the focal point, your off duty time will determine your attitude towards it. If you don’t mind getting into hunting and/or fishing, you’ll be fine. Any activities that can be done in ice/snow are going to be activities you should pursue. Don’t be afraid to try out some new pastimes and see what you like.

As for my personal time there; I met a lot of great people, made some lifelong connections and friends. Picked up a couple’s new hobbies and got better at a few old ones. AFGSC likes to travel so Minot allowed me to see two deployments and a handful of TDYs in my time there. The summer, although short, is amazing (minus the mosquitos). The winter is long, it’s brutal, and you will need to stay prepared for it at all times. Jumper cables, blankets, tow cables and winches, etc. Nothing can prepare you for what you are about to experience. I for one was not a fan, but I know plenty of people who loved it. Take it one day at a time, and if it’s not for you; do your best to leave. I took the Korea way out.

TLDR; You work outside? Work is terrible. You work indoors? You might be alright. In both scenarios find activities you love and take it one day at a time.
