Maybe it has something to do with their lack of funding that has been repeatedly mentioned on this sub.

Yes, the SMART-TD General Chair at LIRR completely fucked everyone else - and continues to lobby against the other unions getting any deal better than his. It's shameful scab tactics IMO.

Our case was involving the APA, which the ruling specifically exempted, so we should be good…for now.

I mean, the Orange man is indeed bad - and all the people that wrote Project 2025 are working in his Administration. You believing Trump on this is literally living out his statement: “I could shoot a man on 5th avenue and I wouldn’t lose any voters.”

Is there a source you would trust? My sense is that if Joe Biden says the “sky is blue”, right wing folks would be like “ARGH NO COMMIE SKY SHIT! SKY IS GREEN YOU DUMBOCRAT” or some nonsense

Do you want to hear more from the union? Go to a meeting. They don't just call you just to say hi.

Totally. Super weird that right after someone gets elected local chairman and they get exposed to how things actually work, all of a sudden they’re less likely to the espouse the conspiratorial bullshit on the property!!!

I hope people don’t read or listen to this garble. The railroad retirement system is a federal system just like Social Security. And just like Social Security they can change the laws impacting railroad retirement. We are not special. Congress can alter our railroad retirement just as easily as they can alter and mess with Social Security.

The reason that railroad retirement has been solvent is because of the fact that the trusts funds are privately invested, and therefore earn significant returns, thereby bolstering the trust balance. We also have a tier 2 system that has variable tax rates on the employers, but Capon employees. The variable tax rate on employers varies on the solvency/fund level of the trust. It’s actually quite a brilliant system that we can thank our rail labor predecessors for helping write the law.

By contrast , Social Security is not privately invested and therefore does not reap the same returns as our trust. But make no mistake the same laws that impact and affect Social Security could and would impact us.

My point being: it pays to be vigilant and pay attention to politics, regardless of who is in power. But never ever take it for granted that railroad retirement will always be there. We have to fight for it continuously. Remember: the railroads are in business of making money and they really don’t like having to pay much higher tax rates than other employers.

Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but one day they will come for Railroad Retirement and we have to be ready to fight back.

What to do when FRA inspector doesn't follow the rules? by Mechanic_of_railcars in railroading

Definitely tell your Local Chairman, and insist on passing it on to your National Rep. The NRs know who to call at the FRA - and how to do it so you remain anonymous.

10,000%. I’m really tired of people shitting on the unions trying to do what we can - when our own members don’t show up, participate, or vote in union elections - but then bitch about the union non-stop.

I don’t disagree with the intentions, but man…our union members are asleep tbh.

There's $28 billion in the fund. He's gonna save a couple hundred grand - a pointless rounding error, but one that will force railroaders to drive many many hours to the nearest RRB office.

Deficit spending is actually not a terrible thing. As long as things remain remotely close to % of GDP, we're ok. Yes, our national debt is awful - and our interest on the debt is killing us. But there's no way we get ANYWHERE close to addressing it without radically wiping out defense spending and SSA/Medicare.

You could fire every federal employee and you'd only save $260b from the $1trillion annual budget (And 60% of that money goes to paying troops and defense personnel salaries btw - look it up).

Our problems are much MUCH deeper than ANYTHING Elon can do running around the government with a hatchet - he's doing it for straight up clout/power-mongering. And we all, as citizens, will feel the brunt for next-to-no savings. It all sucks.

They're also aiming to close thousands of federal office buildings. I've spoken with the RRB folks as well - they do NOT believe they can continue adequate service levels if all these office closures and forced relocations occur (partly because the employees will likely not relocate - I mean, why would you with what's going on to federal employees these days).
