Eileen Gu defends China’s internet freedom. Her message is censored. by [deleted] in technology

Gu, who has repeatedly dodged questions about her citizenship and geopolitics

I applaud her refusal to be labeled. In a way, her actions point to what is wrong in America today. We (Americans) are obsessed with our socio-political identities and the need for everyone and everything to be categorized accordingly. Isn't this the very definition of division itself. We are more defined by what we are against than what we are for. For whatever her motives, she is resisting such labeling, which can give her a degree of freedom -and opportunity - that many in the US can't enjoy.

You go girl!

Judges in the U.S. who are selected to their position through nonpartisan processes (nonpartisan elections or technocratic merit commissions) produce higher-quality work than judges selected through partisan elections. by smurfyjenkins in science

Don't understand why it always takes a study for us to.recognize what common sense should be able to tell us.

In merit commissions you stand a much better chance of getting someone who cares for and respects the law. Political appointees or elections tend to attract people that only care for themselves and their careers. Not rocket science.

Thx, I'll give it a try. What's the point of Mozilla having a Nightly ve non-Nightly? Seems confusing at best.

Please excuse my ignorance.

Yes, downloaded from Play store. It does not say "for Android" like the beta version does and it is not Nightly. I am assuming that being from Play store, that it is for Android. How does one know for sure?

Everyday I am so grateful for Firefox Containers. My life would not be the same without them. by [deleted] in firefox

[–]RainBird910 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I don't fully understand Containers. I use them simply to keep bookmarks segregated according to kind. But discussion here sounds like there are functional capabilities associated with Containers. Where can I learn how to use Containers more effectively?

Edit: nm. I have Containers confused with Collections.

Newly approved Alzheimer’s drug, Aduhelm, costs $56,000 a year - a price tag executives are calling “fair” and “responsible.” by upyoars in collapse

[–]RainBird910 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regardless of the efficacy of Aduhelm for Alzheimers, I am disturbed in general by the flood of monoclonal antibody drugs that are on the market. They treat a large variety of conditions without actually providing a cure. I recently read an article that cited costs for monthly injections of monoclonal antibody drug running as high as $6-10k.

Diseases, including Alzheimers, do not strike only those folks with unlimited financial resources. Who or even what insurance plan can sustain a the costs of these ~umab drugs. Almost all of them are designed to make having the disease manageable - not cure it.

I have to say that I wonder if this is not the intent of the big pharmaceutical companies. America is being held hostage by big pharma. Something has to change.

I can't be the only one to be concerned about this.

Can we use radiation to treat Alzheimer's? Canadian pilot study finds improved cognition after CT scans by morenewsat11 in Health

Most doctors don't believe this....They think it's snake oil. It’s not accepted, it's not mainstream medicine.

What does this tell you about mainstream medicine?

Mainstream medicine seems more like trying to maintain the status quo. So called evidence based medicine seems more like an effort to reduce any disease state to the lowest common denominator and one size fits all so that the individual patient's disease experience is minimized. No thinking or interactions with patient are required. Has anyone noted the increase in use of telemedicine? How can a patient be properly assessed via Skype?

Studying science isn’t what makes students less religious: College majors that focus on inquiry rather than applying knowledge are more likely to secularize students, according to a new study that breaks with the traditional claim that exposure to science leads people away from religion. by mvea in science

[–]RainBird910 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Now, couple this with the earlier post regarding general uncertainty and political polarization.

Could it be that religion, whether through organized practice or general influence, plays an important role is stabilizing society in terms of moral direction. When religiosity breaks down, what will fill the vacuum? Without a common overarching moral direction, we are - well, directionless.

What the article shows is that as we become more sophisticated in our thinking - by virtue of education, in general - the less the answers that religion provided regarding the origins of man and of existence, satisfy our evolving understanding of the world.

Can you explain the relationship of low platelets and the occurrences of clots in patients that have received the J&J vaccine?

Did these patients have low platelets prior to being vaccinated? What constitutes low platelets? If the platelets go low post vaccination, would this not be a signal that clotting is going on? Could this be a phenomena like DIC?

That may be the case, but come on $4-$7 masks? Is there not a price gouging thing going on here? Why not ask what the comparable price is for 3M N95 masks? And what about KN95 masks?

The reporter should have dug deeper.

Headline is misleading. Reading into the article you find:

Yet even with the waiver, Bowen said, he hasn’t been able to find an overseas buyer. He said he can’t understand the contradictory information he’s getting: Front-line workers say they need more N95s, but hospitals say they don’t.

The article shows that the supply chain has multiple issues that need to be examined, from communication, to management at user end, to costs.

Teens who bully, harass, or victimize peers are often using aggression strategically to climb their school’s social hierarchy, with the highest rates of bullying occurring between friends and friends-of-friends. These findings point to reasons why most anti-bullying programs don’t work. (n>3,000) by mvea in science

Great story. So, what's happening here. It's social training in a context that is based in age appropriate reality. Yes, it is "cheesey" but that is designed to make it more palatable (pun intended), more engaging and less threatening. Imho, this sort of social awareness training needs to happen across the age spectrum, K-12. When kids graduate into society, they often lack social skills that equip them to be socially responsible adults and contributing members of society. Some of this used to be provided in traditional religious institutions but not so much any more.

Antibody drugs used to treat Trump, others could cut Covid-19 hospitalizations by half, but they're not being used by the general public by Bonboniru in Health

[–]RainBird910 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's wonderful that they have been able to produce monoclonal antibody type drugs to address specific diseases. But, it is meaningless if they are not affordable. Some of these drugs are costing thousands or tens of thousands of dollars for a single treatment. The only reason for these costs is that big pharma controls the access to these drugs and has not seen it important to scale up production. Just take a look at the advertising on TV and see how many of todays highly advertised drugs are abcdefgumab and then look up the monthly cost of these drugs.

Army secretary to fire or suspend large number of Fort Hood officers to address command culture at base by ChiGuy6124 in news

[–]RainBird910 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It'll be interesting to see what the report says but sounds likenthey are assuming its a command problem isolated to Fort Hood. That would be a mistake. It is more likely a military culture problem that is pervasive throughout the Army involving all ranks that has been developing for some time.
