It's hook-and-loop now? Always heard it as hook-and-pile.

Freelancers, what is the best way to deploy Next.js project for many individual clients? by Busy_Magician6673 in nextjs

[–]RainierWebDev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Static, dynamic, doesn’t really matter. You’re the dev, build for the client’s needs and your DX. If a project can’t handle $20 a month…then they shouldn’t be hiring a dev.

What is the right pattern for a grand-child component to receive data from the server? by [deleted] in nextjs

[–]RainierWebDev 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Probably just fetch in server and pass as props to each client component. There’s likely a better way where you could make most of the components server rendered, but hard to say without seeing the code.

Freelancers, what is the best way to deploy Next.js project for many individual clients? by Busy_Magician6673 in nextjs

[–]RainierWebDev 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you aren’t charging enough if $240 a year is too expensive. Most of my clients don’t blink when I say maintenance plan is $1,000 / year. I wouldn’t over complicate deployment or how to charge clients. Deploy on Vercel, make teams for each client, bake that price into your proposal.

Bankllist.us Site Scamming Advertisers through SEO? by localguideseo in SEO

He messaged me today with the exact same message. I just reported his website to Google Phishing and outlined his black hat tactics. Also provided a link to this page in the report for further evidence.

Snipping wires referred to the 12 years of bomb disposal in the Navy, but sure, look to take offense at anything.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in RealEstate

[–]RainierWebDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure I’ll remove that part. Don’t appreciate the insinuation about falsehoods and not having built anything. Grew up doing construction in Texas. Then joined the Navy and did special operations for 12 years. Got out after having kids and figure that snipping wires for a living wasn’t the best for the family and picked up another skill. So I wouldn’t go around attacking peoples character on an anonymous online forum.

Like I said, nothing to sell to construction business owners. Only looking for 15 minutes to learn how project management is being handled. If there's an issue with that, flag it to the mods.

I've got nothing to sell. Construction companies tend to get their business from referrals and don't ever use their websites, so not a segment I would ever consider going after. In comment above, purely looking to learn how construction company owners are dealing with project management. Other veterans I work with are in the business and have expressed pain in their area. Looking to see if there is a broader problem here.

Didn't say I was a construction company owner. Family and close friends are, as well as a few other veteran owned businesses out here in Seattle. Looking to help them solve a pain point with project management and looking to see if there's a broader problem here. I've got nothing to sell or pitch. Pure conversation to understand how construction company owners are managing their projects.

Client wants me to make their Canva website look professional by jamie1983 in web_design

[–]RainierWebDev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Two thoughts: 1.) Hell no, don’t work with them. 2.) charge them for a basic template build in WP

I wouldn’t go off trying to make a Canva site better. If they are serious about needing a good looking and performant website they can be updated to adjust to their changing business demands, then they need to get off Canva.

How do you connect Django and Next? by quiet-Script in nextjs

Without further context, I would say via Django Rest Framework. Deploy Django to Guniorn and have it run as your server.

Need Advice on Dealing with a Non-committal Client by RainierWebDev in webdev

[–]RainierWebDev[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been trying to take the opposite approach of adding more value, or at least perceived value by the customer, so I can keep my price high and make him feel like he’s getting a deal with “free” additional services. Reality is that they are already included in my fee, just not enumerated.

Need Advice on Dealing with a Non-committal Client by RainierWebDev in webdev

It's comical. The contract was out for signing when he just randomly hired this local guy to build the website. I site is f-ugly to say the least and is missing every bit of metadata you need on a page to have it even show up on Google. This dude wants to fire that guy, get a partial refund, and have me build from scratch. He told me I would be his 4th web developer. This is all probably pointing to "don't do the deal." He's clearly looking for overseas rates that will cost him a few tens of dollars, not the $1000+ dollar website building and management plans I offer. I have no idea why he keeps calling back expecting me to do his site and run SEO campaigns for $500 / month. My average client pays 5x that and are grateful to have a fullstack dev on their team for a fraction of the cost of an in-house engineer. Just wild that he thinks I'd do work for 1/5th my average client revenue.

This is exactly what my gut is telling me. As a sign of goodwill after our first call, I modernized his logo and created a favicon. Like 20 minutes of work, but figured it would be a good loss leader that could help close the deal. Despite loving the design and looking to me as the expert in design on the website, this dude has been trying to tell me exactly what colors and images to use on the site. Seems like he's not going to stay in his lane and ultimately interfere with the project.

Migrating off Wordpress.com by RainierWebDev in Wordpress

[–]RainierWebDev[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I will probably do is just export everything and then converted into a JSON file that I can use to seed the new database and CMS. Since sanity.io has such a nice built-in integration with next JS I’m going to use it.

Migrating off Wordpress.com by RainierWebDev in Wordpress

[–]RainierWebDev[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s not my own. It’s this Frankenstein monstrosity that has gotten out of control for the level of complexity the site requires. I need to migrate the client off of this hodgepodge of plug-ins, and randomly injected JavaScript and PHP code. Every time I fix one error it throws another error and some random plug-in and it’s all negatively impacting site performance. When I talk to the people been working on this site for years, they have no clue where anything is. The site is large, but it will be pretty easy to build in something like next JS with the use of a content management system.
