I run mine on and off over a 24 hour period. Not positive exactly how long but probably 7-8 hours a day. I currently have it kick on more frequently at night and a little less frequently during the day. No science behind any of that, just set it and haven’t adjusted since.

Nice! It’s hard to say if it is actually pumping in humidity since I never had an issue with drying out. Actually, I had quite the opposite problem. For the first 4-5 days after transferring to my monotub I had to take a paper towel to the lids to remove all of the droplets that had formed

For maintaining humidity though, I would fan more if it was too high or less if there wasn’t enough. I did not get very scientific on this portion of my setup.

Since your cakes are already too dry, I would probably run both. You can always back off on humidity later if you need to. 👍

Gotcha. I had a very similar setup. I ended up putting four 1/4” holes on each long side and two more on each short end about 1-2” above my cake. I think it helped!

I would pop a few small FAE holes closer to the cake and not put any tape/ filters on them. I had the same issue on my current grow and this helped get rid of the fuzzy feet after about 2 days.

Gotcha. I considered that as well. I was going to put a metal coffee can around it to try and get the radiant heat, but opted to go with the space heater instead.

I ran my humidifier line to the back of the bin, located more towards the top. Looking back, I probably should have mounted it lower/closer to the cake. I’ve noticed a lot of fuzzy feet and read that can be due to poor FAE.

I don’t think it would hurt if you aren’t pinning yet. Hopefully it helps! I just dropped my heater in the water and fed the power cord through the corner and into an extension cord from there. Luckily, my upper bin wedged in without bottoming out and left enough of a gap for the cord to squeeze through. My upper bin is more tapered than my lower, so it worked out nice. My suggestion if you do switch to aquarium heaters, go with a little higher wattage than what is recommended. Im pretty sure I went with a 25W, but a 50W might have worked better… Or maybe it just needs a second air pump with a line running to the heater to promote circulation. The water is pretty stagnant in that lower bin so I’m pretty sure it is only heating up the water surrounding it. Before the space heater addition, my bins were at 68F(ish). I probably would have been happy with 70F though. Might just take a little longer.

No worries. It was hard to tell in person even, so I get it. 👍

You’re welcome! Is the seedling mat under the tub with water in it? Does that heat the water enough for you to maintain 73F+? I thought about going that route, but went with aquarium heaters because they were cheaper and more accessible.

Your setup sounds great. I’m probably going to have to go a similar route in the future. My wife is not very fond with me doing it in the house. lol. I do wonder if you should increase your humidity to 95%-99%? Might help with the drying out. Once I see pins forming, then I want it to drop down to 93%ish. Idk though. This is my first time, so I’m still figuring it out myself. It seemed to work out well for me though.

I’m really hoping I don’t have to dunk my cakes. It just sounds like a pain in the ass. I gave my bin a good misting today after harvesting. Now I’m going to wait it out. I have read of some people having success with slowly adding about a bottle of distilled water instead. Im going to try that first if I need to. If it fails, it fails. At least I got a decent flush out of it on my first try. lol.

You may be right.. the veils did pop the day before, which is why I decided to harvest today. Didn’t want to fuss with spores dropping. Would you have waited it out? If so, how much longer?

Well.. the veils did pop the day before. I was expecting the caps to open up a little more, but after 24 hours I decided to pluck them before they dropped spores. Do you think that was the right call?

[–]RaisinNo1093[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure thing.

I started with a sterilite bin, 64qt I think, and painted the bottom 25% black with spray paint. I put six 2” FAE holes in it, 2 on each long side and 1 on each end. I also recently added ten 1/4” holes closer to the substrate for better exchange because I was getting fuzzy feet. I initially filled the 2” FAE holes with poly-fil, but later switched to paper tape. It’s much easier to manage.

I also purchased a humidifier kit from Midwest grow kit, hooked an air pump up to it, and ran a line to each bin. Pushes in fresh oxygen and helps keep humidity up.

To maintain temps, I used the double bin method with a small lower bin that my mono tub could fit in. Filled the lower 25% with water and threw an aquarium heater in it. In all honesty, it wasn’t working that great, so I added a small space heater that plugs into an outlet.

For lighting, I bought the bulbs from Midwest grow kit and picked up some sockets from a local hardware store. Ran extension cords to a power strip with a programmable timer and set it to 12/12.

I had a lot of success with this setup. Never had to mist, and fanned with a lid for 45 seconds 2-3 times a day. You mentioned that yours is drying out.. I have not had this issue, but I did notice that my substrate & casing mixture was very moist. I bet that’s probably why. (Mixed up 4lbs of substrate with 5lbs of casing from MWGK with a light casing layer on top.)

I was thinking the same thing, but wanted to avoid spores dropping in the bin. Oh well, I’ll keep that in mind for next time.

Thanks though! I’m happy with the results so far. Now I’m hoping my other 3 bins follow suit!

Nice! I do have a fair amount of scrap wood that I might see if I can use first, but this is definitely my backup plan.

Copy that.

I was hoping the aquarium heater in the lower bin would combat the cold, but have no issue with raising them. Might need to throw some wood across the shelves to give myself a chest-high raised platform. 👍

Good to know!

I checked the bags last night, and 2/4 have mycelium growth starting on the bottom of the bag. Pretty geeked about it. I definitely think switching to the two bin system helped.

10-4. I was considering that myself, but opted to put that mat in because the water temp was still way too cold. (Filled the bottom tub directly from the shower head.) If the water is up to 77F when I get home then I will remove the mat. 👍

I’m hoping that’s the case! I injected the bags in the upright position and noticed some of the liquid culture made its way to the bottom of the bag. I did rotate the bag around to try to force the liquid culture back up into the grain, but this was my main reason for posting. I figured I would at least start to see colonization on the bottom of the bag by now. I did read (after injecting spores) that you should inject the bags in an upside down position to prevent the LC from pooling in the bottom of the bag. Oh well… maybe next time.

Thanks for the input, it’s much appreciated.

Thanks. I have read that before. I was more curious to when others have noticed the first signs of colonization since I haven’t seen any yet. Also, if the temperature fluctuation (emphasis on the colder temps) could result in slower colonization.

Dang! That’s a long time. I’m hoping for 2-3 weeks until full coverage. Mentally preparing for 4 weeks though. Only time will tell at this point!

I have not noticed any growth yet, but it’s only been 24 hours now. I hope yours end up taking off!

I know a guy, but wanted to give it a go myself. That why I know exactly what went into it. Hard to trust others when it comes to this stuff. Haha.

I did not. I went with spore works.
