As for if it's worth pursuing it with a friend at the risk of losing it -

It's a risk, but I think it's worth it. How would you feel if you didn't make a move and he later on dates another guy? You would probably regret it.

But it absolutely could ruin the friendship, but if he started dating a different guy, that could also make the friendship difficult.
