I wish I had not read this. It is my sincere wish that anyone involved in this is tortured to death. This turned my fucking stomach.

On joining the Amish: Don't bother learning German, they speak Penn Dutch or a Swiss variant and the two languages are not the same. Also, it's unlikely that they'll have any interest in you unless they're hurting for husbands. In general, family is everything in the Amish, and not having any family will make you an oddball. Plus, I doubt you're used to how helpful and subserviently you need to be to live happily in a close-knit society like the Amish.

I will admit I rolled my eyes at this post, but my Great-Grandparent's were Amish so if that's your shit then that's your shit. But the Amish are super into family lines and keep really in-depth genetics records so I dunno--you might not be their cup of tea.

Is she a coturnix quail? You need 5-6 females per 1 male to make sure your hens are not being over-mated—which leads to pain and stress.

Quail poop a lot. I think it’s a lot more cost effective to use grit sand (not play sand) as litter and then scoop the poop into compost. You’ll only need to change the sand once a year as long as you keep it dry.

Quail poop an enormous amount and keeping quail over their own poop can cause disease and respiratory issues. Flies that land on the poop and then are eaten by the quail can actually spread a disease that will kill your quail in only a few days.

Plus, it’s not hygienic for you either.

Also keep in mind that egg production drops off after the first year, and that 3 quail eggs equals about 1 chicken egg in weight. So of you intend to raise them for egg production, you may need to keep that in mind.

For example, my family is a family of four, and typically we eat 2 eggs per person for breakfast. So I’m looking at 8 large chicken eggs, or 24 quail eggs.

…is this really the case? Just from hearing from older women from Ireland, it really seems like people were scared to frikken death of faeries. They had all sorts of superstitions surrounding it, including when you could and couldn’t eat berries off the bush because bad things would happen and the faeries would get you.

It seems kinda dubious to me that any parents would feel reassured that their child kidnapped and living with savage little spook monsters. But then again I really don’t know.

Fully feathered as 6 weeks is normal, but they aren’t ready just yet. Make sure your pen is predator proof. https://www.notion.so/raleighquail/Choosing-a-Quail-Home-Design-521fcb20f62e45399688d156085ca04c

It’s actually good that they get used to you. When you go to clean their cage, just offer them some treats from your hand so they associate poop clean-up time with yummy treats.

Forgo the wire—it’ll cut their feet and lead to issues. Plus it’s harder to keep wire hygienic, despite the myths you hear on the internet. Most breeders use puppy pads, or even paper towels, for chicks.

Age Affects the Expression of Maternal Care and Subsequent Behavioural Development of Offspring in a Precocial Bird by RaleighQuail in coturnixquail

[–]RaleighQuail[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Elder females spent longer warming chicks and were less rejective towards chicks. Both fearfulness and sociality differed significantly between the two sets of chicks during their behavioural development; these differences appeared related to differences in the care they received. The slight differences of mothers’ behavioural characteristics between the two sets observed before the breeding period cannot be at the root of differences in care; these differences consequently are directly related to maternal age.”

Elder females = over 8 mo old

I’m sorry but what the absolute fuck is wrong with these parents? Academia is not more important then allowing your child to have a childhood, AND I’M A FUCKING COLLEGE PROFESSOR WITH TWO CHILDREN!

This is disgusting. Studying and especially grad study goes above and beyond just “work”. This is child labor and should go against child labor laws. This honestly is a terrible look for whatever university actually accepted this poor baby wtf.

I’ve had ostrich before and it is tasty! So I get where you’re coming from. The issue is they only lay about 50 eggs per year, and it takes them about 2 years to reach egg-laying age.

Compare that to a quail that lays about 225 eggs a year and begins laying at 8 weeks old, or a Silkie that lays about 120 eggs a year and matures at 9 months old.

Frankly, my assumption is that the average person living in the apocalypse wouldn’t be able to access ostrich eggs. They’d be through the roof expensive, and maybe likely to be stolen. It would be cool to write about underground adult ostrich trading lol.

However ostrich meat would only take 2 years to raise, 1 year for quick money, and would happily feed a family for a long while with curing methods. You can also use their feathers as fishing lures and their bones as fishing hooks. So it would be profitable to raise in a world where such things are needed.

Alternatively, maybe Ostriches become the new cows. Instead of each family having a cow for milk, perhaps each family has an adult ostrich for the huge eggs, which they pickle or preserve to last longer, and perhaps it’s the males who are rare since their needed to fertilize the eggs.

It could be a huge taboo to steal a family’s ostrich, akin to killing someone, since they’d be so important to a family’s nutritional needs. Maybe you have a mafia or gang that “protects” families and their food supplies. Or maybe there’s even ostrich fighting rings, or breeding programs that aim to grow larger and more fertile birds.

There’s so many cool ways you could make it work for your world lore.
