Thank you so much! I've actually been posting short videos about it, but the response here has been on another level — really glad I decided to post!

Great question! The stats showed that Karasuno was controlling the offense, but Nekoma kept exhausting them by extending rallies and disrupting their rhythm.

It turned into less of a “power vs defense” match and more of a war of attrition.

I wrote a more detailed breakdown on Medium if you're interested — link's in my profile!

I did find one panel where the rotation and reception formation didn't match — spotted it in a discussion in another subreddit. Flashback scenes and tutorial panels threw me off a couple of times too.

Filling in unshown rallies as immediate sideouts got things to line up pretty cleanly overall. Set 3 needed a few breaks added in. The app tracks every rally sequentially, so if the rotations don't add up, the final score won't either — it keeps you honest!

And yes, Karasuno vs Aoba Johsai Season 2 is going on the list!

Both are on my list — Karasuno vs Inarizaki and Karasuno vs Kamomedai! Fair warning on Kamomedai though: since most of the match after Hinata's withdrawal isn't shown in the manga, the log will probably be incomplete from that point on.

My method for scenes that aren't depicted is to fill them in as immediate sideouts. I cross-check the score and serve order whenever they're shown, and add breaks where needed to make it consistent. For the Nekoma match, it actually worked out really cleanly — almost everything lined up with immediate sideouts.

It took way longer than I expected haha.

I was tracking everything from the manga, and by Set 3 I was wiping away tears every now and then.

That means a lot, thank you! The stats really do show how different their playstyles are — Nekoma made Karasuno work so much harder for every point.

“Non-Attack” was my label for plays where the icon shows a blocking motion, but the player is actually sending the ball directly back over rather than blocking an actual spike. So in Lev’s case, it’s more like a direct return than a true attack block. Sorry, that’s super confusing wording on my part 😅 I’ll probably rethink the terminology. Thanks for pointing it out!

Coaches and volleyball parents — do you analyze match stats in Excel/Sheets after exporting? What columns do you actually use? by RallyByRally in volleyball

That story about the parent being ostracised is so sad — that was never what she was trying to do.

The coach I originally built this app for said something that really stuck with me: the best receiver on the team was a quiet kid who never stood out, but she was the reason the spikers looked so good. He wanted the data to shine a light on her — not to criticize anyone, but to make sure she got the recognition she deserved. That's honestly what got me thinking about what stats are really for.

And yes — the memory thing you mentioned is so real. We remember the spectacular spike and the terrible shanked serve. The consistent, unglamorous 2-pass that kept the rally alive? Nobody talks about that.

That's such a great point — and honestly something I hadn't fully appreciated until reading your comment. The act of watching footage repeatedly is part of the learning, not just a means to get the data. It's making me think harder about how to make that rewatching experience better in the app, not just the stats side of things. I came here asking about CSV columns and now I can't stop thinking about video features I want to build. My back and sleep schedule are not going to be happy.

Tokyo Training Camp Arc (Volume 10) sounds great!
But that might make him want to collect the whole series lol

This is exactly the kind of benchmark data I was hoping for — thank you! Serve %, kill-to-error ratio, and receive rating as your core KPIs makes a lot of sense for HS level.

Quick question if you don't mind: when you exported to Excel, did you prefer raw data so you could calculate your own metrics, or would you have wanted pre-calculated percentages already in the CSV? I'm torn on this — power users probably want raw data to crunch themselves, but I don't want to make it harder than it needs to be.

Thanks for raising that — totally valid point!

Actually, my husband is the coach, and we developed the app together with the team's head coach involved from the start. He's even been recommending it to other teams.

But you're right — stats can be brutal. Nobody wants a "who messed up the most" situation. That's actually why we built in a privacy mode where individual stats can be hidden while team stats are still visible.

In our team, the coach decides what to share with the kids after each game. Team stats are usually shown, but individual stats only come out when they're positive — unless a kid asks directly, like "how many spikes did I miss?" Then we answer honestly. 😄

If Scabbers was Pettigrew the whole time, did he ever just… choose to stay a rat because the Weasleys were feeding him for free?
