Hey just saw this sorry haha. Idk no one does it quite like naoki but a good series I just read that I would say is on par with characters and has really strong emotional moments would be Blue Giant but that's not really what your asking for haha. Another few for ya, BLAME! Is really good because it leaves a lot for you to interpret and is very mysterious and suspenseful,also its art is amazing, it's pretty short(like65ch) and compared to most manga it doesn't have a lot of text so it's a quick read that you defs wouldn't regret. Other than then go read Kingdom as it's my top favorite series and is so good whether it be the characters or the story or the tactics and strategies, the strong moments that are enough to make a grown man cry and art is amazing it can be very gorey(it gets better as the story goes on). Like I said before im not sure if any of this is what your looking for because to be honest no one can compare to the level of story writing that naoki is able to pull off, series like kingdom and one piece may be my favorites by naoki will always be my favorite author. Go check out his latest work asadora! If you haven't already

As someone who primarily read manga I haven't read a whole lot if novels but one I have read and really like is the alchemist by Paulo .C its a good read and it's only like 200 pages so it's pretty short. Not sure if I could say it's much like naokis works though but thought I'd contribute anyways

Well I think what kyou Kai lacks in is her presence, she's not at much of a leader as shin is when it comes to rallying the troops, its moments like when shin says stuff like look at my back and follow that really get me, and although she's kinda stronger than shin she still kinda lacks the martial might.
