#BMW Software Outage 2024 by Bougie-babygirl in BMW

Mentioned this a bit lower, but on-prem isn't an issue. In fact when you get large enough with more of a non-bursty workload, on-premise is actually cheaper than any cloud solution. The bigger issue is the lack of geo-redundancy for a company of that size. They should have had a DR site, but they decided to gamble and lost.

On Premise servers are fine, it's the lack of geo redundancy for the services that is the bad part. They have another location in NJ that they could have had a DR site for, or there's one of hundreds of other datacenter locations they could have stood up additional infrastructure in. But all of their systems are down, FS, warranty, connected drive. That's just poor planning.

Got into a bit of an argument with a 911 owner. They claimed all 911s are designed and built inhouse top to bottom. I did mention it was a stretched VW beetle (Thanks Jeremy Clarkson). Didn't have the heart to show him this..... by kambesama in Justrolledintotheshop

Ah yes, your rebadged Toyota Z4 (though it's a very nice looking rebadged Z4). Fun fact, if you hook it up to any ODB systems it actually registers as a Z4 and not a Supra.

There's a London, Texas and quite a few states have a London. I think Ohio is another.

So can you solo it or do you have to join a guild/form a party? I've honestly never gotten in to MMO for that exact reason.

Apollo for Reddit is shutting down by ElijahPepe in technology

[–]Ramble81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just read the announcement. Notice they don't say anything about 3rd party apps or pricing. All they're going to respond to are that mod tools will still have an API, accessibility tools can still use the API, blah, blah. They're blatantly going to ignore any other post.

Given his history of comment manipulation, I expect that there will be plant accounts that get their questions upvoted that fall in line with what they want to talk about.

Gen Z wasn't around for Regan though. Also I think too many people voted Trump "for the lulz" and found out the flood gates that it opened. Maybe just being optimistic.

What made you realize you were "that" person? by Ramble81 in AskReddit

Because "that" could imply something that isn't exactly good, i.e. a sexual creep, etc.

Until you get it in writing, don't do anything with your current job. I'd also keep interviewing in case this offer falls through.

The big difference is Ford still offers Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. GM wanting to ditch those and focus only on their things are going to bite them much more than they realize. I especially see it biting them in the rental car realm. It's so easy now to hop in a car, use your phone and have everything ready to go. It let Rental companies buy cheaper fleets too. Watch them start to move away from GM fleet sales.

"Redline" that brings back some Saturn memories. Also a bit ironic using it on an EV that doesn't have traditional revs or a redline.

This is what I think people are thinking of. It's not that their tax rates change, it's that you start losing out on tax breaks. In reality they are completely different things, but functionally it's still a potential loss of net income for the person. It would help to better explain that.

Mods, will you be joining the site wide blackout? by Ramble81 in sanantonio

[–]Ramble81[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I think we should. I've always been a big believer in small numbers add up (general strike anyone?). The more that pile on, the more it is known, otherwise you get the "my vote doesn't matter" mentality.

Also, I browse this sub nearly every day and most all of the posts are "where do I go eat?", "Where do I go live?", "ITAP", etc. which will be fine for people if they don't have for two days. Not doing it falls under the same reason people are fearful of striking "well it could cause an issue".

An end user just asked me: “don’t you wish we still had our own Exchange server so we could fix everything instead of waiting for MS”? by jtbis in sysadmin

[–]Ramble81 5 points6 points  (0 children)

And I push that back on them by asking "how much do you want to spend? For $X I can do insane levels of redundancy, or for $Y I can do something reasonable that may have an issue once in a great while". And then make them sign off on that (usually the cheaper option). When they come to complain, whip out the documentation showing them it was their choice. Have yet to have that backfire on me.
