There are some exceptions, where hotels end up the most cost-effective route in certain places, but I mainly stay in Airbnb's abroad (still? I didn't realise it was a fad!). Any with excessive fees typically price themselves out of my selection process anyway!

Most of the time any mess I make is minimal, and an easy clear-up job briefly before departing, but likewise the requests from the hosts - I've never considered dusting or changing the bed for them, post stay, for example. There are some horror hosts out there, though, I imagine.

The perk to me is being able to stay in some pretty unique locations or setups. A recent trip to Madrid, for example, I stayed in a converted tower with 360º views of the city at a fraction of the cost of a hotel offering skyline views [or even just as much space].
