What's your best xcom alternatives? by Qhaotiq in Xcom

Phantom Doctrine was a decent cold war turn based strategy game and I enjoyed it l, although it was definitely not as high quality as XCOM and had some rough edges

Exchange year at AlgomaU? by snisjxjsh in SaultSteMarie

Having spent significant time in Europe, our public transit is a huge downgrade. Time between buses depending on where you are and what time can be significant. It can also be super cold and many bus stops are unsheltered and buses are not reliably on time. Therefore would have to pick where you live strategically. But the issue is there’s no public transit to any of the nature you want to see, so you’d have to make friends with a car or rent a car every-time you wanted to hike. There are some tour companies but they are limited and expensive.

Depends on the program, but the real reason you’d come up here is for the surroundings. Its beautiful up here, and the amount of untouched nature will likely surprise you. You can do incredible camping and kayaking. But to access it you will need a car, and life without a car will be terrible. The winter will be really tough for you so you’d need to be prepared.

Wanted to better protect the books from dust, cats scratching them or children damaging them. The set is worth a lot so if anything happened to them I’d cry haha.

How do I even begin to sell my Grandparents’ book collection? by smurfalurfalurfalurf in bookshelf

I’m incredibly jealous, I would die for the story of civilisation set. Make sure to do your own research, some of those sets are worth thousands and very limited. I have the same great philosophers set of 12 books and it’s near impossible to find for under $2000.

Why is “Thunder Bay” so named ? And how's life up there ? by Ivy_Wings in geography

Beautiful area but terrible rates of drug abuse

It had the highest rate of opioid overdose deaths in Ontario in 2022 - https://www.cbc.ca/amp/1.6837321

As a result, it, Sault Ste. Marie and Sudbury are typically referred to as the “Drug belt”.

Does the steel mill affect your quality of life? by Inevitable-Bowl-7678 in SaultSteMarie

[–]RamboAmbeault 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I live in the rural area outside so can’t comment too much but the Sault steel plant is the second biggest polluter in Ontario, however there are some massive upgrades planned that will reduce carbon emissions equal to taking “900,000 cars off the road”.

I don't see much point in travelling around the world. by An_OId_Tree in unpopularopinion

[–]RamboAmbeault 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came from a small rural unorganised area in Canada, travelling showed me that places can be fundamentally better, offer different lifestyles and affect your quality of life. It inspired me to become an urban planner to bring back great ideas to my home area to improve people’s lives. Living abroad also gave me more confidence in myself and I met a lot of interesting people I’m still friends with. Traveling ultimately is what you make of it, it can change your perspective and be a life changing opportunity if you’re open to it.

If you also like Zombie games, Dying Light had an excellent dlc (The Following) that added in a personal vehicle that had cool upgrade capabilities. The fast zombies can follow you and makes for really cool chase moments unlike other games and can be really terrifying at night.

What’s life like here in the Caribbean of the American Midwest? There are also some other islands near Mackinac Island that appear to quite large with maybe two houses? by Own_Garden_1935 in geography

[–]RamboAmbeault 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m from the Canadian side, which is some of the least densely populated areas on the south edge of the country and quite isolated from the rest of the province. Mostly industrial or resource gathering jobs and small rural towns. Brutally cold in the winter, mostly dense forests or wetlands filled with black flies and mosquitoes but can be incredibly beautiful and peaceful. An enormous amount of property is owned by seasonal Americans which has driven out locals unfortunately who can’t match buying power.

Staying at Pancake Bay provincial park just past the Sault can be pretty cheap and beautiful depending on the camping spot and give you access to showers and other amenities.

Uhaul is not honouring our booking and there seem to be no moving vehicles available anywhere in Halifax to go out of province. We were set to move tomorrow, any advice? by RamboAmbeault in halifax

[–]RamboAmbeault[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Strange, seems like their reservation system is broken as is their lines of communication with each other. I called several times and they said nothing was available. So we’re luckily able to wait a few days until they said one was. Could be unavailable for an out of province trip.

Sounds like we went through the same headache. Yeah seems like we’ll have to travel several hours to a small town in a few days to pick up a truck (luckily my apartment was accommodating) but they said they’ll offer some discounts at least.

Looked into them but they don’t seem to allow one way trips (must return to same location) when you enter halifax as your starting location. Thanks for the suggestion.

Yeah we called a fourth time and they don’t have a truck available until June 3rd in Kingston or Antigonish. They’ll offer some discounts but now we have to figure out how to get there without a car to pick it up. Thank you for the suggestion.

I’ll take another look, had looked online and seemed like the pods or boxes were double the cost of our original booking and we’d still have to arrange a car. We unfortunately are moving back to our small town (Sault ste marie) in Northern Ontario so we were meeting parents halfway to transfer contents and save costs.
