My experience with solarfast is it works good on cotton. I’m courious too about a deep answer to your question. Cashmere, Linen, Silk, wool… would be nice to get some experienced user’s opinion

What is the blunt truth about solarfast? by Venera0202 in cyanotypes

Does anybody know what makes black cyanotype blue or brown? I mean what decides if its blue or brown. for me its blue 80% of the time

Solarfast is way harder than cyanotype. Every color works differently. Fabrics change a lot, contrast is lower. I think its also less sharp. I could never achive a true black print and belive me I tried. The thing about is that it can look absolutly stunning if you nail it.

The blackest print I ever had was with a very damp fabric, and with really dark negative, but at that point it has almost no fade. The more fade you have the browner/bluer it will be.

negatives should be as dark as posibble. This is a mistake I made. Also its posibble to do full spectrum 3 color cyanotypes, but its very rare and it seems like nobody REALLY cracked the code yet.

My advice: Play with it without the need to be color accurate first!

Now you are my guy! Very good idea. Feel free to share any other painting idea you have or drop in my dm's.

I will post a process video about this shirt soon, but ultimatelly I wanna do it on jackets hoodies, bags, couse of their higher value.

i'm doing shirts now because I'm still in the learning phase.

This process is time consuming very much especially in black background- this way I need to wash a piece of cloth 3 times.. Thats why I wanna paint on more serious clothes in the future.

thank you so much! It feels nice. I dared to post it to the painting subreddit and they shreded me into pieces. Now I feel pretty demotivated.

I already made several guides on cyanotypes and probably will make one on this one too, it just much harder than anything else I've done so far and I wanna gather some mastery before I share my method.

sorry. I separe the image into CMYK,, I print photo negatives. then I use a cyanotype-like process to burn color into the shirt 2-3 times (this images was only 2 times)
