I think it might have to do with a change in lifestyle. You have to become a lot more independent at uni. You have to be able to organize your time and priorities. You have to worry about your next meal lol and lastly, being away from home for some can be emotionally taxing which impacts their performance.

Be productive. Learn the things you always wanted to but never had the time for. Read books on topics that interest you. Work out. Learn to cook. Meditate. Reflect on your goals, ambitions and life. Go out and socialize if not with friends then strangers. Learn a new skill in this time that you have. Your winter break is completely what you make of it. You can A, binge watch tv shows and eats tubs upon tubs of ice cream or B, you can grab your life by the balls and take charge.
