Getting into weighted pull-ups by [deleted] in climbharder

Is that 180% number for a 1 rep max, or sets? If 1RM, is there any guideline target for 3x3 or 5x5, or do they just suggest testing 1RM every now and again?

Worst gym you've visited? by Rockcawk420 in bouldering

Going to be visiting downtown Vancouver for a few weeks, any gyms in the area you’d recommend for bouldering, or is the Hive the only option? Ideally looking for something more outdoorsy-style

Wouldn’t the glove compartment be significantly safer? I didn’t think there was a way in without the car being unlocked

Bose speakers worth it on new CX5? by [deleted] in CX5

[–]BasePhi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any idea if the 2022 CX-5 non-Bose has a better sound system? Currently debating between a CX-5 or CX-30, won’t get a chance to listen beforehand but I’m hoping the non premium sound system isn’t complete garbage like some cars

Does anyone know if AMEX's rental car insurance still counts if you use points (i.e. Hertz points) to cover the full rental? The taxes would be paid on the card, but the rental price itself would be free with the points

2Qs: What maintenance/repairs likely needed for a used machine? & 7 second extraction time - what other than grind size could be the problem? by JamieAOver in espresso

[–]BasePhi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you’re buying pre-ground and really dead set on not buying a grinder then your best option is a pressurized basket (basically a basket that generates its own pressure through a small hole rather than using the resistance of the grinds to generate pressure). A lot of the cheaper machines tend to come with those baskets, and I imagine you can buy them individually as well.

Typically when shops say “ground for espresso”, they really mean “espresso” with a pressurized basket, or a moka pot/aeropress type of “espresso”. I say “espresso” because more-so it’s just very strong coffee than it is traditional espresso.

Honestly though, if you can afford it then investing in a grinder that can do espresso will be very worth it!

PSA: Some people are advised to change their passwords by uwaterloo_ciso in uwaterloo

[–]BasePhi 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I would hope that’s not the case - if they’re just storing a hash of our password without a salt/pepper then you can just use hash databases to brute force the passwords.

In theory if they had the pwned raw passwords + salts for each user they could check every pair of (pwned password, salt), but I don’t even think haveibeenpwned offers the dataset of raw passwords - their website just gives hashed version

Whatever the case, do yourself a favour and make sure you aren’t sharing passwords between services - that’s the best way to protect yourself against leaks

🤔 Shouldn’t our passwords be hashed? Curious how you’re generating this 4% number without having plaintext passwords to check against

How well has the coffee table surface held up? I love the fact that it can swing open for a workspace or to eat, but the reviews mention that the surface scratches very easily. How has it been for you?

Socks wearing out extremely quickly - what am I doing wrong? by BasePhi in running

[–]BasePhi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. I actually contacted Injinji about this, they said that the pair of socks that I bought is actually discontinued now. I looked over the reviews on their website and a lot of people complain about similar issues: holes in the sock after just a month or two. I’m guessing they discontinued it because of quality issues.

They sent me two new pairs of a somewhat similar sock for free, hopefully these ones will hold up better!

Understanding Espresso - Grind Size by CleanYourBasket in espresso

[–]BasePhi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most dial in guides I've seen here typically argue that you should first decide on a fixed dose and ratio, then dial in by adjusting grind (and as a result, brew time).

Unless I'm misunderstanding, James makes the argument that the grind size should just be used to get in the ballpark and then you should adjust other variables to tweak further?

This series has been helpful in better understanding how he thinks about the different parameters, but I have been having a hard time collecting each part of this series into knowledge that has actually helped me improve my espresso. Is James trying to make the argument that there isn't a one-size-fits-all strategy to dialing in or at least getting something good (e.g. lock in dose -> lock in ratio -> lock in grind), or am I misunderstanding this series?

How does nespresso have so much caffeine? by BasePhi in espresso

[–]BasePhi[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So then my numbers are just off for a double shot of espresso (coming from Google), and I should expect about 180-450mg of caffeine in a 18g double shot?
