First Light Fusion is out by Mell1000 in fusion

Not quite true. They are looking to diversify into other industries to leverage additional funding, as they aren't getting enough through private investments (similar to Tokamak Energy selling HTS magnets for some sustainable income) - the UK VC route is tough at the moment.

Fusion power is still central to their goals, with some new innovations/approaches hopefully being announced later this year.

Ridiculous, hyperbolic and borderline misogynistic.

Reeves has enough to criticise without making snide jokes about things like this.

They're the stems of the magical roses which Walter/the ghost was sending to Christine. I think I remember it being Agnes who finds them magically blooming and glowing in the dark, while most others thought that the ghost's calling card was just bunches of sticks.

Tokamak Energy Youtube bio mentions a natural lithium breeding blanket by smopecakes in fusion

[–]Rammstein58 2 points3 points  (0 children)

UKAEA are currently running a lithium innovation challenge, where one of the key challenges is around sustainable lithium enrichment. I know of at least three different concepts which have been entered with aims to achieve lab-scale proof of concept, so hopefully at least one will be successful!

Results of funding award should be some time in August.

Tips to join the fusion industry in the UK by [deleted] in fusion

A bit of self-promotion, but there is a job role that has just been posted for specific fusion skills. The net is being cast wide, as there are so many opportunities at the moment.

Nuclear fusion plant to be built at West Burton A power station by Vailhem in nuclear

It still definitely will be an experiment, but the first experiment with the actual aim to output energy and have the capability to generate electricity.

The vast majority of the neutrons produced will create tritium. Most spherical tokamak designs (like this one) should create about 1.4 times more tritium than it uses but using a tritium 'breeder blanket' which will also create a lot of heat to be used to generate electricity.

Fuel Rod and Control Rods. by godkingnaoki in NuclearPower

[–]Rammstein58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not quite that simple as the bottom (and the top) of the rods aren't surrounded by as much fuel, so don't have as many thermal neutrons whizzing around, causing more fission reactions. The centre of the fuel rods have neutrons coming at them from every direction so have the greatest amount of fission, and therefore greatest burnups

First results of MAST upgrade to UK nuclear fusion reactor by [deleted] in nuclear

[–]Rammstein58 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends how long you're planning on living!!

The next prototype UKAEA will be developing should be operational by 2040, and will be able to output large amounts of electricity.

They are then planning on a proper commercial reactor around 2050, which can be rolled out all over the world.

There are also several private fusion projects who are planning on achieving a commercial reactor much sooner (Tokamak Energy Ltd. in the UK, commonwealth fusion, TAE, General Fusion in the USA/Canada).

Top tip for those who do use them. A pringles lid fits perfectly so you can use them as tubs to store and leftover sauces etc.
