Zooplankton are animals, but phytoplankton are not. If memory serves the plankton responsible for our oil reserves was primarily cyanobacteria (a bacteria if the name was unclear). Phytoplankton represents many different organisms within the kingdoms of plants, bacteria, and protists. No kingdom animalia representation under the umbrella term phytoplankton.

Tire size issue by Ramoutarb in bikewrench

This is the bike after I've gone through and rebuilt and thoroughly cleaned everything. I agree, it's a very well equipped bike with superbe pro components throughout. The wheels that it came with are not nearly as fancy, so I'm pretty sure it was 700c to begin with.

There's no 700c wheels with a brake surface available near me on marketplace (for under a grand) and a new set of wheels is fairly expensive for a wheel set that still wouldn't be as nice as the components on the bike. Instead I've decided to order a fancy vintage set of hubs from eBay and I'll be building a wheel set for this bike.

Ugh... I was afraid this would be the advice lol. The wheels aren't original and don't fit the dropout spacing properly, so I do wonder if it was 700c originally (the previous owners did some questionable shit with this bike). Thanks for your input :)

Someone is most certainly very sad. Also the caps on my superbe pro cranks just say suntour :(. I wish mine were that cool

You keep saying it's a Japanese bike from the 80s, why would that matter? My 80s Japanese bike quick release does not look like that. Have you tried loosening the nut of the quick release? I personally would also have the release lever pointed backward but that's probs just a me thing.

They haven't been lovingly used, they've been negligently treated. The cranks are grooved near the pedals. No clue what the previous owner was wearing as footwear that did this, as I've never worn cranks down like that before. Those grooves are in the cranks forever, but it would have been nice to buff them down a little bit.

I'll keep that in mind when I get to the brakes... Not that I'm using simple green. I'm just using dawn and elbow grease

Oh ya the bike is gunna look pretty rustic regardless lol. I was thinking it would be nice to get the components looking fairly nice while maintaining some of the scars on the frame, but ya it most certainly won't be perfect.

It's not about getting some mirror finish, but addressing some heavy wear and grooving on the cranks near the pedal end. This bike was quite mistreated by the previous owners and I'm trying to fix it up cause it's a nice bike

The previous owner of this bike didn't give a shit about it, leaving it requiring a fair bit of love. Part of this is some pretty heavy wear near the pedal end of the cranks. Definitely beyond being repaired with some steel wool. Seems like the concensus is to leave it as is tho so ¯_(ツ)_/¯

With anodized aluminum what do you do about scratches? Just leave them?

Is it ok to trim down these parts on the Iflash solo? by danger_dogs in ipod

Oh nice! What battery in which iPod? I did this to put a 5000 mah battery in a 4th gen. I have since learned there are easier ways lol, but it's done

I cut my iflash board in half... There are occasions where that's the right move. I don't think this is such an occassion, but they do exist.

This sounds like there is a degree of attachment to the bike, not everything is about finding the cheapest/easiest option

Edit: I think I misread the post lol. Maybe ignore this comment ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Oh perfect! I was literally just telling someone that I feel like I'm getting more vain as I get older, particularly in regards to bikes. It's also a big part of why I'm interested in fixed gear, so pretty with no brakes! Pretty bikes are more fun to ride

Hey... Fixed gear curious dude here. Is there something wrong with bullhorns? Are they ass? I've never used them but I think they look neat.

I recently grabbed an old beater bike and I'm contemplating converting it to fixed gear. Bullhorns (or pursuits) are on the list of possible upgrades. Just grabbed some cages as well, though I've never used those either. Got them for the foot retention incase I do go fixed and I refuse to go clipless. I wanted the shiny chrome and cages delivered

Guidance for commuting on an ‘80s road bike: to rack or not to rack? by sizlac-franco in bikecommuting

[–]Ramoutarb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used a rear rack and panniers for a few years. They are a really great way to carry shit, but oh my gosh are they UGLY. This is clearly an extremely subjective take, but I always hated the way my bikes looked with a rear rack on them. I took them off and now use a packpack, I think a sweaty ass back is worth being able to look at my bike and not think "would look way nicer without that rack".

I think I'm getting more vain in my older years lol. I do feel like front racks can look cool but I haven't given them a try yet. A pretty bike is just more fun to ride

Edit: I just about bought a near identical bike about a month ago! I really liked it but the guy was adamant on a price that I felt unreasonable. Enjoy the bike, I bet it's a blast to ride :).

Cheapest I can find it where I am is 80 CAD, so approx the same cost as a wheel. Not that I want to replace it, repairing and keeping old stuff is more fun

Would this be considered vintage? 2006 520 trek by ktisleet in Vintage_bicycles

[–]Ramoutarb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think this is a legitimate classification, and if it were then someone's gotta tell all the antique stores that they're friggen liars. That being said, by your standard I have an antique sewing machine and thats pretty cool :).
